Hi I have a 1980 FJ that is having carb issues. Have decided to purchase one of those cheap aftermarket ones and then have the OEM one rebuilt for installation later. My FJ is originally from California and has all the emissions equipment. In my research of part numbers there were different ones for California vehicles. Will I be able to use a replacement carb (part no. 21100-61012) for my OEM (part no.21100-61065) or am I screwed???

I hesitate to offer carb insight, based on model-year, etc.

But, I can tell you, I have read, several times, where the Aisin carb experts (@65swb45 (Mark), @Pin_Head , @FJ40Jim) have stated, something to the effect, that the '79 and '80 Aisin carb's are the worst of all the years... IIRC, one of them recommended obtaining an earlier or later model-year carb and rebuild it or have it rebuilt.

Maybe these experts will chime in... Both, Mark and Jim rebuild these carb's, as part of their respective businesses.

HTH

Thanks so much. I've decided to desmog since I live in NY and hold onto all the parts. And have the carb rebuilt

Troll hole a vendor on this site sells a nice carb for a desmogged fj40. Just put one on mine and runs great out of the box. Not much need of adjusting,

I agree with what @pngunme says above. I think people say the the 79' and 80' carbs are the worst of all years is because they have the smallest venturi's. I can tell you from experience that @FJ40Jim rebuilt my carb 3+ years ago and it still runs great.

If you want to retain all your smog junk you'll only have a few choices. You can desmog and use a new Trollhole carb. Or, and this is what I've done since one of the pigs had all it's emissions components intact, you can take your OEM carb and send it to Mark @65swb45 or Jim @FJ40Jim for rebuilding. Both Mark and Jim offer excellent service but be prepared to wait at least a few weeks (maybe a month). It's worth the wait to have the correct carb cleaned and tuned especially if you want to try and save all the smog stuff. I've used Jim for both my pigs carbs. The 40 has been running well. All 3 trucks are in the 78-80 time line.

61012 is a saudi spec 1981-85 2F carb. It will not directly fit a 79. the 61012 is shorter, the choke cable won't connect, and the electrical connector is different. Plus there's the whole completely devoid of anything resembling emission control, not even a choke breaker.
Just rebuild the 79 carb and be happy. It is not the ne plus ultra of cruiser carbs, but it fits and works.
