Hello, I'm new to the Land Cruiser scene. This is my first post so I hope I can get the pics posted correctly. I recently got my first (1987)fj60. and I'm trying to solve an issue where it starts right up but then acts fuel starved - runs rough, and quickly dies (this problem began after it ran out of gas in my driveway). Before this happened I could always smell a strong gas odor coming from under the hood.

I've replaced fuel filter, rotor, cap, wires, plugs, removed the reservoir bolts and cleaned out those jets. I read something about a screen at the fuel inlet connection though mine doesn't have one. There is fuel flowing to the carb. I can't tell what the level is in the glass window.

Now I'm removing the carb for cleaning . I have it all disconnected except for part of the throttle linkage. I can not figure out how to disconnect the linkage from the carb. The ball with the pin is easy but it's still connected with some secondary linkage. Otherwise I would have to disassemble it at the firewall? Surely it separates from the carb but how? (pic 1 below)

There are a couple of other issues that may or may not be connected with the engine problem. First, I noticed what looked like a missing washer / pin connector that I rigged back together. That didn't solve my issue though. Maybe it still needs something - what's missing there? (pic 3 below)

The other thing is when I was removing the carb earlier tonight and I removed the throttle linkage bracket there wasn't a spring connected to the hole indicated in pic 2. I thought I saw a diagram showing a spring attached there somewhere.

I appreciate the help. I have searched the forum for answers. I get close but need some specific help. Thanks!

couldn't tell you about the 2nd pic without taking a look under the hood. its probably good you did the washer thing, although i wouldn't expect it to really make a difference. with the first pic, that short throttle linkage separates at both ends; the metal clamps at each end of the rod have a flex and spring open as you pull it directly away. i hope that makes sense

On your first pic, just pry the linkage off the ball, it's spring loaded & will snap back on.

On your second pic, you are missing the spring that goes from the 2 little holes you can see on 2 pieces of the linkage. It is a tension spring that helps return the linkage.

On the 3rd pic, you do need the assembly to be secured, just look on Spector off roads site to make sure you have all the pieces!!!

Got the linkage off and now the carb is free! Thanks for that help. I didn't want to tear anything up.

tmonty - do you think that missing spring has anything to do with the problem of the engine dying? and can you (or anyone) tell me what the assembly in the 3rd pic is called?

Thx everyone!

The spring definitely needs to be there!!!!

It helps return the carb linkage based on pedal position!!!!

I'll send you a pic later of size & location!!!

Here's 2 pics!! The return spring is about 1 1/2"-1 3/4" long not installed!!! About 2" installed!!!!

The other pic is what the piece looks like from factory!!!

Good luck!!

Good luck getting it cleaned & adjusted!!!! If all else fails, get it rebuilt by someone that knows what they are doing!!!!! It'll make things wonderful for you when trying to get all the gremlins out of the engine!!!!!

I have my old carb off mine that you can have rebuilt, then install it & send me your old one after you get it exchanged!!! In case you use yours as a daily driver!!!!

I have a question as I just rebuilt my card and am putting it back in, and it is related. Does the bracket in the second picture above mount right under the lower body of the carb? It seems to create a gap between the carb and the manifold.

Thanks,
Andy

No. bracket goes on top of that bottom carb flange...
