I know I should only focus on one truck at a time, but I need some help with the '77.

I posted this in the 40 section, but I thought I'd bother you guys with it too.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My truck has been running very poorly lately. It will stall out unless I have the choke pulled. I opened the hood and found a spring laying under the carb. Where should this spring be?

Here is where I found the spring:

I think that the spring belongs on this shaft:

Where should this spring be?

That spring goes on the main engine computer. It forces the computer door to shut.

(Actually, I have no clue.)

Check out these cab pics from a spare FJ60 carb-the function of that spring is the same, and it's attached to the mechanism that controls the power valve, so no surprise your truck runs poorly.

If needed, I can get some pics of a 78 carb I have, which will be closer to your 77, but even this one is almost identical.

I saw you post looking at the Xmas tree run thread.

Edit: not the power valve, doh, the accellerator pump.

Anything to do with winter gas or a gummed up carb?

I've got a real nice recently cleaned up carb from an FJ60 if you are in need. I sold my 60 last month so I have no need for it anymore. Let me ASAP if you want me to pack it in my bag.

I dont think so. The issue started while I was on the freeway. The gas was only a day old then. I have since added some octane boost to the fuel and some Sea-Foam. Neither seemed to make a difference. I also sprayed some carb cleaner down the top, also no change. But the carb is dirty.

Rob,
Pack it if you got some room.

Is the problem that it just doesn't want to run well regardless of the driving conditions or does it act up under certain conditions? My 60 has had problems with idling. They have always turned out to be vacuum leaks, some easy to fix and some not so easy.

Without choke pulled out enough to advance the RPMs it will die. Driving is fine but I attribute that to the RPMs being high. It seems like the motor isn't getting enough gas.

I'll pack the carb best I can and hope TSA doesn't give me a hard time. I'd be happy to take a look at it while I'm out there if it's still giving you trouble. I've spent a few years tinkering with these carbs and have some occasional success. :D

fuel filter new?
