So, I just added this 2013 to the stable, and it has one of the God-awful, glitchy, 16" tesla screens in it. Has anyone got an idea of what's involved in going back to factory HVAC controls, and switching to a more "regular" head unit?

This thing doesn't even come on half the time. I pulled it out to check for loose wires, and it looks like a blind man with no thumbs put it in. Halp!

This is the reason I didn't want to upgrade to these after market head units. They look nice, fancy and high specs but don't have the same operational reliability and 20 yr old OEM equipment.

You could not pay me enough money to try one of these POS. I think you have two options. One, go to a Toyota dealer, try and find dash replacement part numbers (praying that no chop chop hapenned to brackets to install that thing) and bend over for the eye watering bill. Two go to a junk yard and find a totaled 200 about the same year and negotiate for parts.

@notyourmomslx450 they have videos how to install these junk. I would watch it, reverse it, and buy a used OEM unit from Ebay and install that.

Good luck.

Probably have to buy a new one. The good thing is the tech doubles and the cost halves every two years

I have one of these 16" Tesla units in my 2015 which I moved from my 2013. Reinstalling a factory unit is simple. The hard part is finding a factory unit if you didn't get it with the truck. Not likely anyone would sell the OEM unit but you never know. The units can be glitchy. Mine works OK but it took me a lot of jacking with it to get it reliable enough. To trouble shoot one installed by someone else would suck. The wiring harness is confusing and half of the wires aren't used and some of the plugs can fit into the wrong sockets. Some have a separate video 360 camera "box" some don't. You also don't know if the PO messed with the firmware. There are "upgrades" available to the firmware but that can also jack up the unit.

If it was mine, I'd reset it to factory settings, rip it out and completely install it myself. Then, I'd try to upgrade the firmware (Sergey Kozlov). Lots of videos online and several threads on this here. Theoretically, this should only take you a couple hours but in reality, you'll probably spend a solid day doing this. W/o the lower part of the OEM HU (HVAC buttons), your a bit screwed with replacement options. In the end, you might just have to buy a new Tesla style one. I think you can get one for <$500 now.

Until your OEM system craps the bed and it’s $10000 to replace like on my 2011 GX460. And no I didn’t add an extra 0

Set eBay alerts to find ya an OEM unit.

Theres several on there now, I’ve seen nice clean ones go as low as $400

Example (more $)

I’ve already bid on this unit in an attempt to make money off @notyourmomslx450 ‘s plight.

I’m jk.

This sucks man. I’ve been on that end before. I’d say return to OEM the best way you can ideally. If that’s not possible, reach out to whoever made your head unit. Maybe they can help? If bad wiring, your choices may be limited.

Funny, The tesla head unit was one of the best mods I did. It is easy to plug a factory head unit back in if you have one. I used mine to help troubleshoot an issue that turned out to be the stock amplifier under the drivers seat. I lead a lot of trails at events and having Gaia on a huge screen has been awesome. I have been debating going to a newer model with a new version of Android that has Android Auto

I did have an issue weher it didnt work well and I had loaded too many things in memory leaving very little space for the unit to work in, think like a windows swap file. You might take a look at how full the memory is adelete stuff. My cause was I had loaded too many movies into the memory

Every thing about vehicles is about personal preference. If you don't llike it, maybe someone would swap with you as long as it is working. That would require a post in classified, not here, but you could link it from this thread.

i am not tech saavy and i listen to AM radio if I ever even turn things on.

But if you were my neighbor, I would come over and buy your screen, when you upgrade to the new, just so I oculd scroll Mud while driving.. what a cool feature!!!!

Any loss in functionality with these things?

Just a precaution, be very mindful of part numbers, I went back from the terrible tesla screen. What they did on mine was to piggyback the signal from the wires under the driver side seat, changed the OEM amp to another brand and installed some sort of bypass box behind the tesla screen (where all of your original wires plug into and then go into the screen) getting the OEM unit back in is pretty easy, look up videos from the people over at GROM vline and follow the steps to get into your dash. Cheers from Venezuela! (Sorry for any weird sentences, not used to typing a lot in english)
