Can upper tailgate max opening height be adjusted? (1 Viewer)

I'm finding that the upper tailgate comes dangerously close to hitting my garage door when I open the tailgate in the garage to the point where I'm going to have to be super careful how far I pull in. I tried the usual Toyota adjustable height routine (press the tailgate button while the door is moving), but that just changes direction. I haven't seen a max opening height adjustment in the owner's manual, so I'm just hoping I may be missing something. This is on a 2020 LC.

I don't think so. But if you are at the rear, press the button twice and you can manually open the liftgate. But the struts will push it up at some point, so for a stop, I keep a microfiber cloth in the back that I flip up on top to protect the liftgate from hitting the garage parts. Hope that made sense.

You can install shorter struts to limit the amount it opens. There is no factory toyota solution for this.

That might be worth exploring. If I don't pull quite far enough into the garage, the wind deflector can just barely make contact with part of the door mechanism and I have already noticed a few minor marks on it because of that.

LOL - then I'd be walking into that damn ball any time I have the Land Cruiser out to get at other stuff in the garage (mower, tiller, etc.). But not an entirely crazy idea...

They make a laser version the tennis ball thing. No dangling ball, just a red dot with a target in the dash

I do seem to be getting used to how far I need to pull in for this to not be a problem, so I'll see how it goes for now. Due to the current world situation, I'm not going out much, so if we ever get back to something resembling normal I'll be going in and out of the garage more and it should be easier to get my bearings on a reference point in the garage. But if it continues to be a problem, something like the tennis ball is actually a nice low tech solution.

I think the "trick" (although not actually tricky) is to identify a reference landmark that you can use every time.

I just pull in until the garage door opener emergency release cord is lined up with the back of the sunroof, and that's good for me.

I suspect that lowering the lift to avoid the door would open a whole Pandora’s box of head injuries for everyone in your family.

If this is just a function of positioning in the garage, the 360 degree camera display on 2016+ lets me put the truck in exactly the same spot each time.

alternatively, you can buy a Chevy Tahoe and the struts will sag in no time. I replaced 3 sets on the Chevy before buying the LC.
