Can someone confirm my alternator has a internal voltage regulator from these pics?

I have searched the whole engine bay and cant find a VR anywhere. Its driving me crazy! Do i have a newer refurb alternator that has it internally? I think my VR has gone out and im trying to figure out what i need to order. thanks so much in advance!

The VR is next to your left elbow in the bottom picture, on the fire wall to the right (and a little high) of the heater blower. "I BELIEVE..." (as Larry the cable guy would say it) most all 40 alternators were exernally regulated, hince the VR on the fire wall.

I say this, because all the VR's on my 40's are located there (on the fire wall).

I have the same connection with the same condensor on my 40, not sure what the condensor is for, but I'm sure I'll (we) will find out shortly..... somebody will tell us...

Your VR should be on the DS firewall, just as WL says.

Newer model 40's ('79+?) used internal voltage regulators, which live on the alternator housing.

I thought that as well but it's not there. In fact the second to last pic shows where it was mounted at some point. I've scoured the rest of the bay looking for it.

It looks like an internally regulated alternator. You can cross reference the number to verify it. What gives it away is there's only one wire connected to the two pin connector. As far as the four pin connector, I believe it goes to the amp meter.

Yep. 55 amp internally-regulated remanufactured alternator there according to my searches.

THANKS! I guess ill order a new (remanufactured) one and replace it. Hopefully that fixes my voltage issues. At some point a PO must have replaced the 40amp with this one...

thanks for the help!

I am almost certain that is an FJ60 alternator hacked into your cruiser. The VR is in the square part of the case you can see in the lower part of your second picture.

The wiring has been bastardized. The smaller wire is an exciter wire, and the unused connection would be for the idiot light that FJ60s have in the dash.

I would get the alternator tested before you give up on it and just buy a new one. With all the wiring changes that got made, I'd look for problems there. The first place I would look is to see if you have 12V at the exciter wire with the key turned on. If not, there is nothing to turn on the electronics of the alternator and so it won't make any power.
