In tried searching around here and the 55 site, but didn't find anything definitive, so looking for some expertise.

Looking to do a V8 swap on my 79 FJ55, and may have found a completed conversion package (engine, trans, transfer) from a 1988 FJ60. It includes the AA adapter from the GM 4l60e to the FJ60 19 spline transfer case. My 79 has the 16 splne tarnsfer case.

Anybody know the main differences between the 16 spline and 19 spline Tcases? I am wanting to use the rear Tcase croosmember that boltes to the back of the t-case (I know it can be done for the 16 spline 40 and 55 tcases), but not sure if this is a possibility on the FJ60 tcase.

Thanks,

Eli in Boise

the cases are different, single piece versus split case.
I don't think the rear crossmember will work with a split case.
the split case uses a crossmember under the transmision, in stock form
you'll also lose your park brake off the transfer case.

If it came from an FJ60 try to get the cross-member that was used. Most likely it was mounted under the the transmission to tcase adapter using a GM transmission mount. If you really want to use a propeller style mount you'll probably have to fab your own. The bolt pattern is different between the two cases and all off-the-shelf ones I've seen only fit the older cases.

The split case itself is stronger than the 4-speed cases, and it's quieter due to helical cut gears. If the case is a later 80's vintage it likely has a 38mm idler shaft. Early 80's split cases had a lower gear ratio in low range.
