I've got a third that was shipped in styrofoam which disintegrated a bit - the little balls are EVERYWHERE.

Can I hose the third out or is it gonna go all pear-shaped on me?

I would say hose it out, but make sure to blow it out with compressed air and maybe a healthy dose of WD40 to get all the remaining moisture out. Do you plan to install it soon, or let is sit in the shed for a little while? I would think a thorough drying and a relatively quick install would leave little room for problems since it would be getting an oil bath ASAP.

you can, but the little balls of styrofoam will embed in the grease/oil and the water won't rinse that out. your best bet is a couple cans of brakeclean

X2.

Iggie nailed it.

Chemicals are your friend!

brake cleaner. This was done with my 3rd.

a case of beer then pee the amonia with get it clean and look at the fun you will have you can even envite your friends

Our local diff guy throws them in his heated parts washer and they come out pristine. It doesn't even seem to mess with the pinion seal.

Lacking access to that, a couple of cans of brake cleaner seems hard to beat.

I would install it with the pieces before I used water.

I have stuck some NASTY 3rds in a 5 gallon bucket and filled it with Diesel fuel and let it sit and they come out very nice.

Don't sweat the foamies in the 3rd. They will get ground out and there is nothing that it will hurt.
