I never had much luck with the cheap Coleman folding oven. If you had a monster burner, maybe, but leaks too much heat even when foil-wrapped to hold it in.
That new gas Coleman looks pretty nifty, but no experience.
We have the Camp Chef. It works well and baking is good once you get the drill down on holding the temp. You may need to crack the door open, but its hinge allows this, for lower temp baking. It's not really big inside, but could cook for 4 people along with the top burners.
At one time, I think the Camp Chef was also offered with a built in griddle on top, so may be worth looking up if that fits your needs better.
I have the Camp Chief camp Oven and the wife likes it. You have to keep an eye on the temp, I added a generic oven thermometer that is more accurate, when baking biscuits, cookies or brownies. The top burner is not as efficient as my Coleman so we use a large griddle and cook eggs, pancakes, bacon, burgers ect. Percolates coffee fine also. The Coleman is in the kit as a quick backup if needed. Its pretty funny to hear other campers ask if they smell cookies baking in a tent campground.
I believe I found it on Amazon for a lot cheaper than the big box stores. If you decide to get it make sure and get the storage bag, plan on putting a heat resistant cover on the oven handle it gets pretty hot.
Yeah, and they do draw interest. I've done my fair share of cooking in Dutch ovens and you get some great stuff. But that's a project compared to lighting an oven. POTATO LAUNCHER has some good tips on using it.
Definitely get the travel bag. For extra protection, I cut a sheet of foam to slip in the front to protect it a little better in the bag. We cram everything into our trailer, so it's inevitable somethings pushing up against it.
The Coleman folding ovens work just "okay" based on my limited experience. You need to use a real thermometer and watch them like a hawk. They also don't work well on compact stoves, much better on my three burner Coleman gas stove. I wouldn't want to baby sit one for anything that took more than half an hour to cook.
I've been eyeing the Camp chef ovens for a while now, best price I've found was at Costco, when they have them (seasonal item blah blah blah). Second best was at Sportsmans Warehouse.
Sportsmansguide.com has the Camp Chef at just under $200. There's also a similar one, different brand (StanSport) for $180. Both can be gotten cheaper if you wait for a sale or coupon.
I have the Camp Chef, going on 4 years now. Got it end of season on clearance at Costco for $120 It's pretty susceptible to the wind, but overall I am very happy with it. I whip up a few Dream Dinners before the trip, freeze them and then cook them in camp, makes it easy if you don't feel like spending a lot of time prepping food.
i also have the camp chef and like it a lot. again, the oven can get pretty hot so you really gotta turn it all the way down or crack the door open. id buy another one again
I just picked one of the Camp Chef ovens up at the "Big Box Outlet" store for $65. Turns out it's missing the burner grill cover and both oven racks. It was unboxed but shrinkwrapped so failed to notice the missing parts.
Other than that it works, just debating If I can scab together the missing parts or spend the $40+ and order them online, or just take the damn thing back with the 7 day return policy.
