I was lucky enough to have a friend give me one as a present last year . I haven't used it yet but know it will be passed on one day like a proper heirloom. Jeeeesus its sharp. Having read this thread I appreciate it a lot more now.

Snow and Nealley by far the best axes I have ever owned, they make a slew of different styles and sizes for almost all needs. I may be partial as they were always built in my home town, not sure if they are even still in business because the idiot that took them over ran them into the ground after being in business for over a century. If you can find an old one buy it..

An axe is fun, but. . .

I love axes. They stir up all the wee bits of viking blood in me.

But.

If you're out camping and you want to make some firewood, get you a bow-saw. You can saw an 8-10" piece of wood in 1/10th the time it'll take you to mangle hell out of it with an axe. Cutting anything larger than that is a waste of time and you'll be wanting a chainsaw rather than an axe anyway.

A good bow saw sells for under $30.
E.g. http://www.amazon.com/Valley-36-915...d=1370872624&sr=8-16&keywords=camping+bow+saw

Get you a hatchet for splitting kindling. A rigging axe (AKA framing axe--axe blade on one side and framing hammer head on the other) works well for me and is useful for driving tent stakes and the like. I also have a hand forged hammer poll tomahawk from my buckskinning days. It's a reproduction of an actual piece made around 1810.

As for an actuall axe, yeah, I carry one, but it's a Pulaski--axe on one side and mattox on the other. They use 'em in wildfire fighting. Most excellent for ditching around a tent or digging in tough soil generally and a useful adjunct to a shovel.

Course, the novelty of this one has me thinking!

I have a 30yr old version of that tubular design. Instead of a turnbuckle, it has a threaded rod with a wingnut on the outer edge of the bow. It's a great saw, but I've never been able to find spare blades for it. I have one wood ad one bone blade. Thanks for the link, they might have one that fits mine.

Has anyone ever used one of these?

The vid on the page looks fairly interesting

One of my buddies has it in his mind to build a few, so i'm wondering if it'd be worth the trouble.

Tradarcher/roalco/lingo have the line here---. The Gransfors is one of the very best made axes you can buy. Their felling or splitting axe should satisfy all your camping needs. You should look at all their axes though--I want the 1700 Broad shouldered axe so bad!!(last I looked it was only ~$500)----check that--it's now $625--this has the shorter handle too.

Going to go pick up this one over lunch for $20 (or less)

It's apparently fairly old. Any ideas on maker or style? Hoosier or zeeck?

Mace, it looks just like an Iltis OxHead falling axe that I have around here... Somewhere.... ;-)

Mace, just dug them up, the yellow ones a forestry pattern, and the other is a large felling pattern, both older Iltis Oxheads, and a slightly different eye shape than yours. Yours looks so familiar, with the flat back, but I just can't place it. Looks to be a very nice axe, though, get her tuned up and she should serve you very well!

Those are really nice. I've got 4 of them. 3 single, one double. I think they are some of the finest axes in the world. I don't leave home without one, ever, when I go into the bush.

Yes, the yellow forestry one has been on the road with me for over half a million km, in haflingers, unimogs and the 60. I have a wee gransfors that lives in the Touareg, just in case.... I don't even go to town without an axe and saw along... ;-)
I did break another forestry Iltis once, my fault entirely, it was VERY cold, got the blade jammed in a knot and I twisted it with force trying to free it (very stupid, amateur move) and broke the blade off right at the change in section in front of the eye. Those axes are very highly tempered, and the narrow blade is more fragile than the average iron lump out there. That said, it's the only Iltis I have ever seen, or heard of breaking, and if you put some time into getting a good edge on one they will out cut just about anything.
Don't leave home without it!!

FYI the Fiskars 14" hatchet is on sale at OSH for $19, normally $28.

MAX AX MULTI-PURPOSE TOOL

i got one of these and it is a great all around tool, not a great ax, shovel or pick, but will will work as such as long as you not digging 300 foot of ditch or chooping down forests. easy to pack too.
