Anyone have an idea if it will it buff out or will it need paint work?

Nooo:mad: I'm sorry to see that, but to me it looks like someone intentionally keyed it....people suck. Judging by that last pic and how there are granules of paint/clear coat below the scratch, it looks pretty deep indicating you will most likely need paint work. But since I'm not there to see it in person I'm not sure how bad it actually is.

A good measure of whether it will buff out used in the detailing world is; if your finger nail catches it, it won't buff out 100%. Judging from your close up picture, parts of it are very deep. Some of the scratch looks to be able to buff out (guessing based on far away picture of it) especially up on the fender. However, the close up section will definitely need work. I would suggest filling it with touch up paint and then buffing it back down to match. Or repaint the side of the car...

I had to fill a fairly deep scratch on my girlfriend's 2013 Subie Impreza.

People are awful sometimes... Its hard to tell without seeing it in person how deep it is. Can you tell if the scratch made it all the way into the primer? Use the fingernail trick as @Hokie LX mentioned. If it didn't I would start with some course rubbing compound and DA polisher or even wetsand, then work all the way up to full polish. If there are any local auto detail shops around you they can probably assess the damage and fix it the best they can. It won't be perfect, but if it didn't make it to the primer, it can usually be buffed out. Otherwise its touch up paint or a full respray.

If you have comprehensive insurance coverage on it, you can file a vandalisim claim, pay your deductable and have it fixed. Check with a pro detailer first as it might be cheaper to pay a detailer out of pocket and get it "good enough" VS having to get insurance involved.

Ehhh, looks like it's too far gone to be 100% repairable without a visit to a bodyshop. As said before, if you can feel it with your fingernail, it's usually too much for a buff and polish, then again I've surprised myself in the past with jobs where the paint had been scratched like that.

There's really no point in wetsanding if it's down to the primer as the surrounding paint has no paint to level down with. Depending on how much paint work skill you have, you could get away with repainting with touch up paint, clearcoating, and wetsanding to level it out, but with that much real estate I'd opt to get the panels repainted for a full proper repair.

Depending on what kind of polish you use it may just hide or reduce the appearance of but not actually remove the scratch depending on the amount of polishing oils in it.

I had a write up somewhere describing the touch up process with in-depth instructions but i can't remember which thread it was in.

Don't see that buffing out.

Just got my LX back from the body shop for a panel repaint from a scratch not as deep looking as that (they tried to buff it, but didn't like the results and said any remaining clear coat would be so thin as to be worthless).

What kind of people do that sort of thing? Senseless vandalism.

Ugh. Sorry man. Someone did the exact same side and line to my old Tacoma. Used to bug me every time I'd see it because being on the pass side, you forget it's there.

Yeah, people can be mindless jerks who have no respect for other people's property. Then again, they probably don't have much respect for themselves either...

Good A$$ kicking would take care of a lot of that. ;)

We should be lucky to be alive among these worst parasites.

^^^^^^^^^ Maybe other places, but in Texas "He needed killin' " is still a valid defense.

Kidding of course. ;)

But when I was growing up (admittedly a long time ago), no one except the worst punks/outcasts would even dream of doing something like that.

These days....its common place. If someone doesn't like the bumper sticker on your vehicle, or just thinks its a rich persons gas guzzler.

Pretty sad.

Thanks for all the replies and nice work on that Subaru @Hokie LX . I went to a body shop this morning and like most suspected I'm looking at a complete repaint of both PS doors and front fender. My insurance will cover it and I have a low deductable(?) so all in all it could be worse but what a complete waste of everyones time (and money).

Squirt the scratch with warm soapy water, if it disappears momentarily then it is only in the clear coat. If it does not, then it is through the paint.

If it is only in the clear coat you can sand it down with 3000x grit then 5000x grit then polish and wax.

That's a deliberate key-ing.

If you go to the trouble to repaint get a camera on your truck incase the same a-hole tries it again.
