I am having issues with my 86 runner: The engine will run for a bit, then mysteriously die. Sometimes it will run for 20 minutes, then quit all of a sudden, and sometimes it will run for 30 seconds then quit. When driving it, I will usually know when it is going to die, because it will want to shut off if I take the load off the engine. (like if I come to a stop sign, and push in the clutch, --gonzo--) If I keep the load on the engine, (high RPM's) it will run, but if the rpm's go below 2000, then forget it. When it does quit, it won't re-start for anything. If I can push it downhill, I can sometimes bump it started again, but again I have to keep the RPM's up to keep going. I took it into Toyota, they charged me 600.00 labor diag. time, and they thought it was a stuck open injector. I replaced all injectors with rebuilt ones from RC Engineering, no difference. I have since replaced the following:TPS, (had Toyota install it), distibuter, AFM, coil, igniter, plugs, wires, cold start injector, relays, and ECU...all to no avail.
ANy thoughts? I could really use the help in figuring this out!

make sure the ground wires on the intake plenum are tight.

i has the same problem as you. turns out it was the distributor malfunctioning. i swapped in a used one and no more problems.

do you have any codes?

so the FP reg. would give those symptoms? when it dies, and I try to start it, after a couple of times cranking it, I can smell it as if it were flooding...

yes its not regulating the correct amont of fuel.is in short its letting to much fuel in and thats why if you hammer the throttle it might stay running.
 
install a in line spark tester.
one like this:

if possible, when its idling, monitor the testor. and hopfull with this test you can determine if you are losing spark before or after the engine dies. and furthermore if it spark is strong.
also you want to make sure you have the right kind of spark plugs installed.
should be NGK #1233 (BPR5EY)

a platinum plug should not be used, cause it is desinged to be ignited from the ground TO the elctrode. and regular plugs are opposite.

Also perform this test:
with the key on, engine off, open the air filter housing. put your finger in the inlet and open the Air Flow Meter door. this will close the fuel pump circut.
listen for the fuel pump, and the flow of gas. you should be able to hear the sound of both the pump and gas flowing. the gas will flow back to the tank, so dont worry about it flooding. does the pump skip a beat? does it sound healthy?

now this last test is the most time consuming and challenging. it normally should be preformed when you have a dozen codes for all kind of parts, and after checking the parts they all check out. what i understand it's not too common, only one of my trucks suffered from this. and should be taken into consideration only after all other areas are checked, and or have had parts thrown at it.

the EFI wire harness on the pasenger side has ( if i remember right 4) ground wire splices. these wire splices are made from flat copper. over time it is possible they come loose. espescially if the truck has been wheeled. (noise, vibration and harshness) this was the case on my '89 when i first got it. but after i inspected the wire harness, it revealed more than just loose ground splices. I repaired 48 broken, chaffed and loose wires on the EFI harness alone. and then 12 on the AFM and ignitor harness.

the PO entered the truck into 4X$ compititions and i thinl thats where alot of the abuse came from.

but did you check the integrity of the grounds on the plenum and intake manifold?
 
Haven't checked the integrity of the grounds on the plenum, but did swap out a couple of grounds wires to new ones. After a couple of cranks w/o starting, I could pull a plug from the cylinder, (using toyota plugs) and crank the engine, and have fuel go spraying out the plug hole, so there is fuel pumping into the cyl's for sure.
The shop did test the pump and said it's okay. I'll have to find one of those plug inline testers, and check those other ideas, thanks!!!!!!!

Hot, smoking wires...

I've seen the ground that goes from the back of the head to the firewall cause this kind of issue when it gets crusty or stretched out from a body lift. I always repace it with a bigger, longer one.

Most intermittent running problems that come and go I've had are from wires somewhere on the harness touching something hot. The insulation will melt and cause a short, then after a little while the insulation will drip around and the truck will start again, then after it gets hot it will die...

This happened to me twice: once it was the engine harnes wraped around the EGR pipe on the back of the plenum because a dumb mechanic put it back the wrong way, the other time was on a trailride when my O2 sensor wires were melting and shorting out on the exhaust. That time it was poping EFI fuses as well.
 
Other thoughts.

- A failed Ox sensor did that to me once. No code.
- a failing fuel pump did that to me twice.
- A big vacuum leak. Check that the rocker arm cover gommets, cam seals, gasket, and PCV grommet are ok. Check other places. Missing port plug?
- Seal around the dip stick is tight.
- Check that the TPS and AFM connectors are tight.
- I wonder if a stuck open PCV would do that.
 
Guess there is a possibility of a vac leak, that I haven't noticed yet, but I will check all those. Supposedly the alt. is fine, batt. is good, and again supposedly the fule pump tested out fine. I have been trying to track someone (like Painless Performance or the like) who (and besides TOYOTA for the sheer $ of theirs) builds new complete wiring harnesses for my truck 86 4runner efi, SR5 DLX. (I have been wondering if this is a wiring issue as well as a Fuel Pressure reg. issue) I know it's VERY time consuming to swap wiring harnesses, (like 20+ hours) but considering everything else I have done so far, I think it's worth it...besides the motor is brand new 4K ago.

The EFI harness takes two hours to swap. It might not be available anymore.
