I know here in CT a junk yard is not allowed by law to sell a used cat. If your in a state that requires emissions testing then most likely they will not allow a used cat either.
Bunch of others will say this as well.
Here in CT we don't have emissions testing after 20 or 25 years so ditching the cat is the smartest route. Mine had already been deleted when I bought it up in NH.

Cats on rockauto are maybe around $200?? It's been a bit since I priced them tho.
Walker is a good basic cheap brand of muffler and possibly cats.

In 2010 I purchased. Magnaflow #39894 CA catalytic converter $270 from Kraegen. Has worked fine ever since. Just passed my smog test last weekend.

cal will not allow use of a used CAT, so make sure to weld it OEM style if you go that way. I got a pair of "cali legit cats" "mudshipped" from nevada for about 150 bucks for an fj62...read that how you will; subtext inferred...

Yup you need to look for a CARB Certified cat from one of the major brands. DO NOT go with a used OEM as CARB does not allow that. You're gonna end up bucking up about $250+ each for the proper cats... and remember it HAS TO SAY CARB CERTIFIED.

Your cheapest option would be to just take it to a muffler shop and have them weld in a Universal CAT. Ask them for one that keeps the Thermosensor - They'll want to just cut it off, but it's important for CA smog (and it's an expensive part to replace).

Otherwise, if you can unbolt the old one, and get a 49-State (it's the same a CARB only $150 cheaper) and bolt it in.

You'll have to know someone outside CA to get the 49-State version, or make the trip across the Iron Curtain yourself to an out of State Autozone.

CA and NY (of course) now require the CARB cat.

No one will sell you a used CAT in CA and it's illegal to install one and it's prolly junk anyway.

OR---- 1 gal of Home Depot denatured Alcohol in a couple gals of gas for the next test.

Yes, that's the Universal CARB compliant unit. Will have to be welded in.

But if you're going to have to pay someone to install, I'd just buy at the muffler shop. Might be able to get a cheaper Universal with the sensor port.

Call around.

Is your old one the Original CAT? If yes, it might be cheaper to just get the bolt-in version and do yourself and save the OE setup.

KruiserK's $160 link is pretty cheap. I bought the same CA-legal unit for something like $220 a couple years ago and it definitely helped me pass smog.

Expect to pay 50-80 bucks for an exhaust shop to cut the old one out and weld the new one in. It's not complicated, and any shop can do it. 20 minutes of work, but depending on the shop, you may still get hit with their hourly minimum.

As said above, there is a bolt-in version that you can do yourself. But crawl under and take a good look at the hardware holding your original in place. If it's rusty and brittle, a lot of it will need to be replaced when you do the swap, in which case the weld-in ends up being less of a headache.

5 gallons of regular + 2 gals of coleman fuel will burn alot cleaner.

Hi guys, I got a carb rebuilt with a guy that has a smog computer. (not star certified)
Then it did not pass by his computer but I then got a new cal complaint cat, timing, plugs, filters, pantyhose for the girl,

Where I get my smog tested is an official ASS HOLE certified station, very short of words total dick. Wont say more then 6 words with out getting more $$$!
So he wont give any hints or opinions.
Always grumpy, I hate going there.

The next station is 70 miles RT,

I guess im asking the million mile question.

It could pass or it could need the smog pump next?
Waist of another $60 the local guy just says "I guess bad luck for you dick face"

Iv actually never seen such bad manners from an auto repair store.

Will one gallons of goat piss from home depo make the Hydrocarbons go lower?
Or should I use eye of nut sack herb, with some sexy chickens for this goat farmer to take home to make mad passionate curry love with, I know they cant be bribed but I could bring a goat or a sheep.

I worry about you, Jay, but I am curious about this 'nut-sack herb'

It's near impossible if not impossible to pass a STAR test without air injection. Definitely add some ethanol to your tank before the next test. It's not illegal. Your smog tech can't really cheat on the tailpipe test. Once the computer is started up, it connects to the smog nazi statewide network.

I'd drive 70 miles to another place to find a more hospitable human to interact with.

Bahahahahaha!!! I can't stop laughing.

Sorry buddy.... my only useful piece of advice would be to move to Texas.
