The Goat, He's baiting.

dude, im not baiting s***. What do i get from any of this? jesus christ quit getting all butthurt. If i was buying a truck i would want ALL information so i can form my own decisions. I am not the only one in this forum who thinks there are possible issues with SOME of the transmissions in 2000's or that there was a short run of bad trannys produced in that year.

I based my decision on weather the 90k maintenance had been done or not. I also asked the dealership to pull maintenance records on vehicles that I was looking at, this will give you a full history as long as the maintenance was done through Toyota. I like the 99 but ended up with a 2000 that I found in SC, im in TX, it had the right combination of price, mileage, and maintenance records. Broaden your search area and you will find a good deal on the right rig. I was fortunate enough to have a local forum member go look at my LC before I bought it.

I really like the 5 speed in the 03+ both on and off road.

And yes the LATCH (01+) system should be considered a requirement if you have small children or plan on having small children. It make life much easier and IMO more secure/safer/less prone to user error.

He was talking about me, not u... ;) I think you made your opinion very clear on things

I thought about wy route as evanston has a fireworks open all the time, sounds odd but since my fam moved from montana to oregon i'm low on stuff... i only do it on new years as i'm in such a dry hot place and can't in the summer... But i know Wyoming roadways are probably not as safe as colorado's and weather/wind can be an issue.

If that's a huge deal, you could run I-25 North to the state line, just South of Cheyenne, there's usually a bunch of fireworks places open, lol.

If you take I-70, Moab is only 20 minutes south just before Green River- maybe worth an extra day to really put your new ride to the test!

Well i have my plane flight booked, $50 , nice to have fam with flyer miles, headin to denver this tues, plan to check out the rig and then head back to calif wed am. I was worried about the weather but everyday i check it looks warmer lol - like 40's and sunny next week.

I plan to break it up into two days of driving trying not to drive at night etc, besides gettng water and bringing my snow gear and hiking gear would you recommend any other items? I plan to go to salt lake via 80 through wyoming or 70 through colorado. From salt lake take 80 back to calif. If i go wyoming 80 then stay in evanston or make it to salt lake. I know the rig has been i co its whole life and the fluids are right, he just took it in for a service oil and fluids so its ready to go. I guess staying at a motel the LC will be outside and in the freezing temps at night any issues i should think of before i start in the morning?

Should be a good trip to check mileage, wish it was in the summer and id bring my fly rod and take my time gettin back :)

This is the rig, Ebay link

What happened?

any issues i should think of before i start in the morning?

you might fill windshield washer reservoir with the no-freeze stuff.

if you're like me, you'll be listening intensely to the rig all the way home. i noticed the clunk during my first drive (Phoenix to Reno) and it really had me on the brink of worry (before I understood the issue), so you might also want to bring a lube gun and hit the drive train and save yourself the worry about this insignificant issue.

i also noticed that the transmission D light was not operational on my first drive, but i recognized it immediately as a benefit.

drive safe and enjoy!

This is the thead-merge from hell, that's for sure...

Thought I'd throw out a few clarifications on the 2000 tranny issues, as I compiled the data. Might be nice to have in the FAQ, as search results point to a myriad of threads, some of them helpful, most not.

...even though a vehicle is safer in a crash it won't matter when it's stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere.

what is your budget? $6000? a $6000 100 series doesn't sound like a truck you expect to be overly reliable. Sounds like a truck to take off road and wheel.
I'd actually rather be stuck on the side of the road rather than out in the places I wheel (usually by myself :frown:). Of course I'd rather not be stuck. I'd also rather not be stuck by a greanded front diff while wheeling ('98-'99), a failed brake booster ('98-'00) while going 80 MPH on the freeway, or stuck in summer afternoon traffic in Phx with no AC when it's 115° from a failed MFD ('03+)

...there are a ton of LC's out there why put yourself more at risk buying a 2000?
well, because there's a greater than 95% chance that you won't ever see an issue, and all model years have known issues, usually all pretty darn expensive to fix.
:meh:

...There is often the silent majority who don't discuss the problem they are NOT having. Users don't post "hey I've got 200k on my car and the transfer case DIDN'T fall out". They will definitely post all day about a drive line thud, window regulators or if they had a trans failure...
That was taken into account in the estimation of the failure rates. New users who showed up only to bitch about a failed tranny were excluded from the failure rate estimate, and the total number of the "silent majority" was estimated to the best of our ability as well.

...That sounds like a normal failure rate to me in any model...
 Yes, for any model CHRYSLER...

where there is smoke there is fire and i don't see many threads stating issues with other year trannys, only 2000's.

im steering him away because he stated there is already a whine in the transmission, could be nothing could be something. Would you take the risk?
The failures slopped over from '99 all the way into '02 with '00 definitely seeing the peak. I agree, why risk it with the whine. However, "whines" can come from many cheaper-to-fix-than-a-tranny places. A proper diagnosis is in order.

...The reason you are seeing more MY 2000 trans issues is because Toyota sold twice as many than the two previous or following years - It's the most popular 100 series by sales of any year.
Not quite, they sold more combined LC/LX in '99 than in '00 (and sold more LC and LX individually in '99 v '00), then sales started dropping - most likely from the introduction of the Sequoia in '01 which no doubt cannibalized some of the 100-series market. Toyota sold something like 60K Sequoia's in '01, v. a loss of ~13K LC/LX's - an acceptable financial tradeoff for Mr. T, I'm sure...

no the reason you see more 2000 LC tranny issues is because they changed manufacturers during the year. They discovered there was a defect in the parts they were using from one of their manufactures, which they decided to use in 2000, and switched back to using Araco and the problem went away. the question is, which tranny do you have when you own a 2000? Some of the trannys went at 30K, some went at 65K and some went over 100K. You just don't know. But the common denominator is when they switched back to Araco the problem went away.
I would be interested in sources for this statement, as I've never seen it documented. Nor does the reported failure data support such a clean break in the supply chain - on either end of the model year (ref earlier fail data by MY). In summary, not sure there is any "common denominator" to be had by the general buying public. For sure Toyota knows, but they ain't telling...

...Fact, Toyota changed manufactures of certain tranny parts mid year and the failures stopped...
ref above comments.

I think mud is a pretty **** good cross section of people who own land cruisers...
MUD is a pretty small section of the 100-series sales, probably around 1% - FWIW. From a usage standpoint, it also isn't terribly representative , nor from an economic standpoint either. We're by and large cheap bastards who buy used truck to beat on. (factored into the tranny failure rate analysis by trying to estimate the distribution of MUD-owned model years v. general Toyota sales patterns - i.e. on MUD we tend towards owning the cheaper, older rigs in general)

...You just have to feel comfortable with what you have and research and make a decision you can live with. no biggie, i personally wouldn't buy one.....that leaves more for everyone else.
Cool, thanks!. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. Pick your multi-thousand dollar repair: Front diff? brake master cylinder? tranny? multi-function display? No model year is immune from all of them.

....my opinion. take it or leave it...

1999's have had 3 reported failures here on MUD. 2000 is definitely the worst year, but tranny failures span the range from '99-'02 - at least here on MUD. Not enough data to specify a particular build date range as suspect, but given the +/- 1-ish year range, there probably is no "safe" range, based on build date.

Year Estimated Tranny Failure Rate
1999 0.47%
2000 3.71%
2001 1.68%
2002 1.27%

more gory detail here... https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/501772-2000-trans-status-2011-update.html#post6822293

'99's seem to have their own issues, higher incidence of brake booster and front diff failure - both pretty pricey, but not quite in the realm of a reman'd tranny, unless you happen to have both fail.

Anyway, I'll be searching for another 100 soon, and I will be basing my decision more on condition and accessories ratther than year, and will likely buy in the '99-'03 range. Every rig has flaws, including Land Cruisers. None of the frequencies of these items mentioned would dissuade me from buying the "right" rig.

:meh:

Until there is a confirmed overall sample population the failure rate cannot be overlaid other than the reported issues where the above percentages apply.

re_guderian has done a lot of work and appropriately added footnotes about the collected data. This is still an open case.

Looking for a truck based on it's merits will likely yield a better buy than making decisions based on incomplete facts. For our friend Goat who has a 2003 I think he might be butt hurt when his MFD fails.

Hey fellas, I'm still here lurking and trying to find my LC. Thanks for all the information again!

Recently I've been reading more about Tacos and was intrigued at the fact people are getting well over 300,000 miles on them and are a descent 4x4 rig stock.

So this has put me in a bit of a quarrel, wondering if I should keep the Dbl cab Taco. And instead trade up the G35 For the LC. For one it's safer for my girl and baby girl to drive the Taco or a LC vs the G35. I figure I can always get a 5.0, s2000 or a descent sports car at a later point in life.

So if I trade the g35, I can keep the Taco which I mostly drive anyways, and will now have a family/ 4x4 rig as well.

What y'all think!?!

... For one it's safer for my girl and baby girl to drive the Taco or a LC vs the G35...
not sure this is true given the negatives of single-vehicle accident rates of higher-COG SUV's offsetting the bigger mass, etc in mutli-vehicle crashes, but if it helps, use it as an excuse to get the Cruiser!!!

i know he was talking to you, but he was talking about me. I am not baiting nor should i be accused of it.

I think the accusation is because in one post you're stating "FACT, 2000 failures..." etc. and yet none of the statements were facts. then after being challenged you soften your position with "I think it's possible that some might..." etc. As well, you misrepresented the exhaust manifold issues on 2000's.

In general forums are great places to get information. I'm a member of several and Mud especially is a favorite of mine. But its the same case at any forum that there's a potential for problems when members misrepresent fact with opinion. Almost a certainty that it happens accidentally but nonetheless we all need to be aware of it. And all members should be helping with the policing/correcting of information to ensure we're doing right here on my favorite of forums, Mud.

true story a friend i mine was killed in 1994 delivering a porsche carrera turbo to the bay area. They think they got the killer in 1996, he committed suicide before the lie detector test.

'01 100, or '02 LX470

I've had my eye on a 2001 100 series with 113K, and a 2001 LX470 with 128K. My last Cruiser was a 98, and before that a 97, and our first was a 92!!

I haven't gone to look at the 100 in person yet, but will most likely this weekend. I looked at the LX, it's clean and I looked up the service history with the VIN on lexus.com and it has extensive service history, (including the 90K).

I'm kind of excited about the AHC as I have in-laws in their 70's and it would make it a lot easier to get them, (and my parents) in and out of the rig. In addition to that, I could have the clearance to do "expedition style" excursions when needed. Also , I don't won't have the funds for a lift right away, and the AHC would take care of that issue.

I see a lot of AHC is awful on here, and from working at Mercedes I've seen issues with leaky lines, pumps, and valve blocks on vehicles with ABC, (Active Body Control) and burned out air compressors on vehicles with Airmatic. I have to believe that Lexus has done a better job with this feature on their vehicles and it seems to me that it would be much more reliable?

The Cruiser has nothing fancy, it has navigation and that's about it. It has a bit less miles, but I think I's really like to get the Lexus. I plan to have front & rear bumpers and sliders and 285's on whichever vehicle I get, and will be towing a Fleetwood E3 trailer.
