Ive seen some dipsticks like that at work never really thought about why they did that lol. I think renting the tool has to be the better way to find out if its the HG

OH and what the CL add actually said is "Has a tapping sound in the engine, mechanic says that it needs timing adjustment. "

well, just so you know an 80 series is an expensive girl to provide for. yes reliable but parts arent cheap and are not that common. have you looked into a jeep? im not talking down on jeeps, i own an 87 yj, but own it for different reasons than my 80. jeeps are easier to work on, cheaper to maintain and fix. QUALITY parts are abundant as well but there are crap parts out there that break. if you find a jeep with a 4.2, you cant go wrong. the amc 4.2 is one of the best-most reliable engines ever produced.

im not trying to talk you out of an 80 just so you know, but if you dont have alot of money to spend, its probably not for you. theyre gas guzzlers. real thirsty. look into a 4runner if you want a wagon type ride...

Hmmmmm you must be talking about this add, been on craigslist for quite a while now, bring a good mechanic and verify that tapping sound isn't something major ....I believe that cruiser is triple locked. Good luck on your hunt!
And welcome to the forum.

The tapping must be coming from the twin amps pushing the sub's in the back! Turn it up louder and you'll never hear it! Even though it's been stolen once (note the busted steering column housing).

This one will need a TON of maintenance based on how it appears to have not been taken care of. If you're a broke college student, this may not be the truck for you due to what it will require to bring it to quality PM and reliability, then the fuel cost on top of that, not to mention insurance. Insurance for my 80 is twice what it is for my Jeep GC of near same vintage.

Best idea is to shop as many of these rigs as possible so you know what is normal/average sounds/wear on them. The one that ticks may not be a good candidate for you , but you could look it over and test drive it to learn more about the. 80 series. We recently did an engine swap on one that developed an incurable tapping noise at 370,000 miles . Still ran good, but found a good inexpensive motor for much less than a rebuild. John

My 100 series has 340,000 miles on it and it runs great. You would never know it had that many miles. Everything works as it should. If you find one within reach, buy it.

On a budget I'd look into a different platform in which to play. Unless cared for impeccably it will soak up money like a sponge.

Just as an example, at over 200K the front birfs will be suspect. Especially if it's on oversize tires already or if never maintained properly. I'm in this boat myself and currently ordering parts for the rebuild. New birfs, inners, seals, brake rotors & pads I'll have invested about $1500 in parts alone. I can do the labor so I'll save the 9-12 hours any shop would charge.

The rebuild interval is 300 KM not miles as previously posted on the engine. Yes it's designed to be bored out twice. But that kind of rebuild with factory parts done By a reputable mechanic can easily hit $10,000

Parts and accessories are much more expensive for a Cruiser. Insurance will be higher than average. And they are THIRSTY. OEM parts are getting more scarce everyday. Know all of is going in.

That said I love mine. It's been the best vehicle I've ever owned.
