Awesome! I missed a few updates, congrats on the 100 Series!

Thanks man, looks like you are busy getting into the parts game with 40's now!

nice relationship you have with mr brown. im wondering about if you have any steering float in the highway ruts with those 33's?

@cors ,HaHa!! steering is just a suggestion with Buster Brown. New tie rod ends and a steering dampener are in the works but only as a precaution because I do not know this rigs history. It is actually not bad and nothing in the steering linkage shows excessive wear or play. It kind of floats over everything in its path. Took a six hour round trip on divided highway, single lane, gravel, and dirt and the only real problem was not enough acceleration in 4th and 5th gear up the hills.

The only issues I have right now is one front brake caliper has a crushed hard line. Hard braking is interesting, not a panic but then I have lived a full life.....

Its quite possible your thread brings in some of the old team. im really looking for more info about steering float, where as the 60 just takes off by itself over the ruts much like a boat over the swell . it can go either way and depends where the tire is. ive had to run my rig on one edge of the highway road wear/rut, if i run it in the main wear line my wife gets rather scared when it takes its own way. new heavy duty springs , tie rod end and connecting rod ends are tight, steering box has been tightened 3 times. hoping your fling with browny softens some of the old teams heart and opens up some tricks to find a solution, cheers

Will just say I put new TREs and a steering stabilizer on tho smaller tires and my truck take tight turns at 30 mph like nothing now, not purposeful but couple times it’s happened, I was totally amazed.

@NeverGiveUpYota I have heard that the steering stabilizer makes a world of difference. I have one sitting on the bench just awaiting the proper application of penetrating oil, time, oil, time, oil, heat, time, oil, BFH, and a pickle fork.

@cors If everything checks out with the steering components and you are still getting wander lust on the highway, I would check the birfield bearings for proper preload or wear. I didn't see that addressed from you on my first read through. Trunnion (top and bottom bearings) would be my first place and then the axle bearings. There is a Special Service Tool SST from Toyota that checks proper alignment of the bearings in the birfield but a fellow mud member (can't remember) sells a version just as good for a lot less. I have not had any issues as to date so no need for the SST.

@LandCruiserPhil has a write up on how to check bearing play by using your hands at 9 & 3 on the tire, a prybar, a wad of bubble gum, and a device that shows you the proper orientation of your solar panels for the maximum effect. I kid on the wad of gum but I swear the rest of it is true. ;) It is in the '80's section if I remember correctly.

Let's hope for some guidance because I clearly don't know what I'm talking about most days.

So a few weeks ago, I drove Buster back to his previous home. Parked him right where this madness all started a little over a year ago (pictures on page 1). The PO, his lovely bride, and one of their daughters took me for a ride in Buster and showed me around the town. It was a bittersweet visit for me and I am sure for the PO. Buster has been an absolute blast to work on and believe me there's a lot that has been done (and still left undone at the moment). It amazes me how nimble this giant is. The lift seems to be getting higher too.

Added a skid plate to improve aerodynamics and increase horsepower another ten percent. Wire wheel, primer, and paint I had on hand. Thanks to @BlueCruiser84

I do realize I am an amateur hack at best when it comes to interior work. I prefer to paint with a broad brush rather than sweat the details. In version 1.0 and 2.0 door cards I learned that even though the 3M adhesive says it works in automotive environments, it in fact does not. So, a new Arrow stapler, some stainless fasteners, and more of the adhesive gets me one complete door card without sagging or vinyl blowing in the wind.

Got a call from my brother in law regarding a local club run on an unimproved road near us. My son was home from college so he took his 1988 Isuzu Trooper and one of his lifelong friends brought his Jeep Wrangler. Buster was clearly outmatched in regards to all the newer technology and halo rings on the headlights of the various built up and blinged out Jeeps. Real nice group of guys and gals. Had an uneventful country drive in the woods.

Gravel just feels better under Buster than pavement. I guess that's true of all our rigs. It's funny, I wasn't satisfied after standing near the white Jeep and I felt a little dirty after the encounter. Got to follow 'Merica over potholes, stream crossings, and mud. Had a nice conversation with him about his toyota truck he left at home.

Ate bbq in the woods, enjoyed the scenery, and spoke to a couple people regarding Toyota and Buster. Got one offer to buy him from a younger member of the bunch. I asked him if he knew what a 5 speed was. He smiled, led me to his 1989 Jeep Cherokee, and showed me his own 5 speed. Good times.

Great write up! And build.
That truck has come a long way.
Love the color because it is just like mine.
I too pick’d up mine in the same if not worse condition. What I did I color sanded and buffed her out and man what a difference. If you do that to yours she will look brand new.
Never the less. Good job on bringing Buster back too life.

HAHAHAHAHA.....are you going to drop it out of a plane?!

You and I know that not only would the venerable FJ60 land correct side up but it would land softly as if cradled by cherubs from on high! At which point it would start on the first try after sitting for two weeks without pumping the gas pedal....ah heck I shouldn't have eaten those mushrooms. They are making me have crazy thoughts. Haha!!

Pictures as promised.
