Ok so I have been getting this burning smell from within the my FJ62. I can't tell if its the heater or burning oil, might even be burning rubber? Not sure. The rig doesn't seem to be burning any oil when I have been checking it. Also I have been getting this squealing noise coming from the driverside of the engine bay it seems like. It sqeals under acceleration until the car is warmed up enough. It doesn't make sense because I had all the belts replaced less then a year ago. And the smell has been pretty constant before and after that belt change. Can anyone help me figure this out? Are they related problems or seperate?

have you checked the belt tension??

each thing that burns has a different smell, ie; rubber, oil, electrical

i had a similar experience when my smog pump started going out. it would lock on occassion smoking the belt over the stationary pulley then start spinning again. this only went on for a short time until the pump totally seized.

You first must determine what smell it is????? Rubber? Electrical? oil? This will determine what to look at.
BigDcruiser might have hit this one right on though. It may be the smog pump seizing for a second or two ( this being the squeeling). The second would be the after effect of the belt spinning on the frozen pulley creating the burnt rubber smell. Check your smog pump, waterpump belt for signs of cooking or glazed spots or even burnt chunks.

definately check the belts. if they're burning on the pulley you should easily be able to spot the tale-tale shiny spots on the belt. good luck.

Had similar problem on our '88 fj62. Thurned out to be that the water pump seized and the belts were still going round and round on the frozen pully. Only make noise for a short time but smelled like rubber burning. Had to look close at the pully to see that it wasn't spinning. It was more obvious when I looked at the fan. doh!
