Last of the 3 piggies is home. Pulled Monteagle Mtn at about 50+/- and I'm happy with that. Cruised 60-65 most of the rest of the trip back from Jasper.

He's holding his own. Proving to be a solid tow rig for our purposes.

Random, but I wanted to document the longer trips and load.

First trip was to Millport Alabama, came back with an fj62 carcass

Thinking about adding some airbags to the rear to help with load leveling. Anyone out there done that? I been thinking about doing an OBA setup for the truck anyway to use for a support rig. Have a compressor if it still works and could mount a small tank somewhere under there.

Bronco Tank and accoutrements should be delivered tomorrow.

Along with tires, probably should look into a set of new shocks for it.

No direct experience but I think the crew down here runs a Firestone kit, at least for the bags. From what I’ve read, they don’t have internal bumps which makes the unloaded ride much better (ie can’t tell they’re there). I’ve heard other brands are much more noticeable when unloaded.

Hopefully others will chime in.

@jynx I had them on my F-250 and they are great. I had the Firestone kit with inside cab adjustment. With the inside adjustment it makes it easier to adjust the firmness of the bags. For instances if you took off on 840 west you would need to soften the bags because if not something is going to break. You'll see what I mean when you take that gooseneck trailer that way. Anyway get the whole system, if not you'll wish you did. It is also somewhat easy to install, pretty straight forward.

very common to add air bag setup on Fords based on what I've read, and many seem to be a big fan of the specific Firestone kit that fits the truck. As noted above I would buy the kit. I think there might be two versions of some of those. One with controls and the other without. I would do that or have to consider a SRW F350 rear spring pack which would likely make the unloaded ride rougher etc.

I'm guessing the F350 SRW spring pack is the same as the dual wheel version, but I don't know for sure.

Sounds like I need to get a Firestone airbag kit.

Thanks

When you say kit, do you mean a kit with the compressor, valves, everything, or just the airbag kit?

I have a compressor I'd like to mount in the truck, would just need the valve and guage kit.

Yes sir. I brought the whole kit. I figured all the pieces were designed to work together as one unit. But I’m as dumb as a box of rocks. It was easier for me to plug and play instead of having to figure out what or how. You have a lot more brains than I do so you could probably put something together that would work great.

you can do the kit and it does make it a little easier but if you wanna be economical you can run the air lines to an accessible location (gas cap filler door) and just inflate using a cheap cordless compressor.

And the bigger question, will it make it to Utah and back?

We're building up to that, but probably a few years out.

Well, had to pick up a stop-gap today.

Picked up these MM hubs to replace the ones currently on the Ford.

When I rebuilt the front-end a few weeks ago i noticed that 2 of the 3 guide tabs that helped locate the splined drive gear when it was in the unlocked position were broken off of the DS hub. I got it back together and ran it and it seemed to be doing OK. Then I noticed on Sunday that when I was driving after unlocking the hubs that I had a very distinct tink tink tink tink sound coming from the front. Lock it in, it goes away, so clearly the hub is cock-eyed and it won't fully unlock. I've looked on ebay, stopped at 2 junk yards and can't seem to find a stock replacement. (With patience, I could probably have found one, but I kinda need to have the truck up and going) I have a brand new set of yukon hubs that will fit, problem is they have 35 spline inners. Yukon doesn't sell just the 30 spline drive gear, you can buy 35 spline gears, but not the other way.

So choice is hurry up and build and swap in the 60 with the yukons, or find a hub. MM are relatively inexpensive, especially when Advanced Auto sends you a 25% off coupon. So picked them up today and will swap them one evening or this weekend and be back on the road.

Stuck the hubs on this afternoon.

Here's the best I can do as far as showing the issue. Here is the broken one.

And here it is next to the PS.

The 3 little tabs help keep the inner gear square when unlocked. Without the tabs, the inner gear was getting cocked in the hub and catching the end of the splined shaft making the tink tink tink sound.

Pulled the old, wiped down the hub body and stuffed in the new MM units.

Ready to ride or die again.

Need to clean the brake dust off the wheels and rotate the tires.

225 Round trip to Glasgow this morning to pick up this FJ60.
