I hated the rear bumper plastic and wanted a little more protection.

Started with some 1/4 tube

Then added some side protection

Supports were added to the tubes, from the bottom of the wings to the frame. Then paint.

That is actually not half bad.

Until he drives over a rock with a rear wheel and the bumper comes down against the rock. The top of the wing will flex right into that cute dimple it is tucked into so nice and tight.

Yep, Inkpot is right, while rock crawling with that "wing" tucked in so close, if you come down on a rock, it's going to make a BIG wrinkle in your quarter panel.

How strong is the factory center bumper/cross member piece? Ive thought of doing something like this but more in a tube bumper style. I'd like to put my 2inch receiver where my bumper is now so I gain some clearance

My rockcrawling days left when I sold the 84 4runner. If I was still crawling I would have gotten the 4x4 Labs bumper to gain the approach angle and recovery points. This add on is considerably lighter and cheaper then the 4x4 labs and should suit my needs. I plan and carrying a recovery point I can bolt into the rear frame if needed.

Though I do expect to hit some rocks now and then but nothing like I used to, no more trips to Johnson Valley for me. This rig is for getting places with some comfort, and less about getting up a waterfall.

I left the bottom open, with out cutting the tail pipe only one side could be fully enclosed. Going to try it out for a while and see if there is a need to enclose it more.

I am planning on adding some mud flaps, but need to pick up some material to hang it with probably aluminum.
