We all have that one or two items we would really like to have in our rigs that did not come OEM or are not a mainstream item. If you own an older 40, AC might be at the top of your list, while 80 owners would just like a decent cup holder.

What I am looking for specifically are options for an 80 series. Things like built in NAV, on board air etc more main stream than say an on board water heater for a shower. If you were building an 80 from scratch, what would you want, do over?

I was looking at the ash trays on the rear doors and another on the PS by the 3rd row seats. Perhaps a 12V power port and USB in that space.

Your thoughts.................

I'd def say the outlets in the front and rear areas and USB ports. Navigation to me not so much as "built in" because like any technology it will become outdated and its nice to be able to take it with....

Heated seats are def nice.

some things on my wish list.
a pistol save/locker that mounted to the area where the 3rd row seating was ( above fender well).
a replacement metal console bottom that was lockable from the inside, (safe/firearm vault) and you just bolted your stock upper arm rest to it. maybe this had a cup holder build into it as well.

Instead of nav, I would like a monitor that replicates my phone screen. That way everything is available just in a bigger format for use in the vehicle. I figured something like this would be out already. Need to search again.

Do you mean things we wish had come in the 80's from the factory?? If so there is a huge thread in the 80 series section on just that that you could gleam ideas on.

Things that I wish had come in the 80 from the factory?? Diesel, 5 speed, seat heaters for the :princess:, 12V and USB ports, OBA would have been nice but I imagine not as powerful as some of the readily available kits to put in a york or compressors like the extreme air are)

Really just the 1st 2 for me as all others have been done and can be done for cheaper than the factory option most likely would have been. There are some great threads on using the ash trays for USB and 12V power outlets in the 80s section also.

If you're looking for things to manufacture that you could easily sell on mud I think a material matching replacement for the ashtrays with the USB port or 12V in it would sell pretty well with the 80s crowd. Then all they would have to do is wire it up.

t already. Need to search again.[/QUOTE]

IPOD mini seems like it would fit almost perfectly if you are a MAC user, Android and Windows Tablets also seem to have a good size to fit. There are a few DD Head Units that run off of the Android software also.

I am looking for options that I might offer for the 80 that were either not available when produced (Nav, USB etc) or something as simple as a couple cup holders. Not so much as items to sell directly to the 80 crowd but more options for the rigs that go through my shop getting a Vortec swap.

The WagonGear rear tailgate storage is just amazing, having that is awesome. Rear power, usb, and a rear cargo area lamp (which many people retrofit) are nice touches. For people who have more than 1 passenger, somehow sliding rear seats would be nice - very little foot space in 2nd row.

If you can't show your phone screen on other devices, you have the wrong phone. ;) j/k On my Linux-based N9, vnc Just Works. :)

The back seat is something I have on my radar. I have not gone too far into it but it seems that the wheel wells limit the rearward travel pretty much to where it already is. A narrower seat that only seats two and can fit between the wheel wells might be the only solution.

how about flushable front seats?.....

Front seats that go back more are also good, land tank makes extensions for 93-97 but not 91-92.
Electrochromatic (auto dimming rear view mirror) is also something I think every car should have should be a fairly simple retrofit
Outside temperature gauge is always a nice gimmick to have.
Heated side view mirrors
I said heated seats last time but cooled seats are also amazing for hot humid southern summers.
rain sensor on the windshield

Just listing some modern conveniences that some may like if they are already dumping mucho dinero into their rig to basically have a "new" rig they may be options some may like.

I will be looking into the front seats moving farther back at some point. I know that on our 95 Heather has the driver's seat all the way back and likes it but for me it needs to go farther back. But there is a rise in the floor at that position that prevents it from going farther back. If I position the seat behind that rise it will not go far enough forward for Heather. I am sure there is a way around that, I just do not know what it is at this point. Heated seats are easy, cooling seats is another story, I imagine that getting that technology together will be interesting.

I am starting the tear down now of our 92 preparing it for a swap. The interior of this one will be pretty much stock as far as seat locations go. The next "shop" truck will be the 95. The plan for that one is to remove all seats and install 4 suspension, bucket seats. This will allow the rear seats to have better leg room as the stock rear seats are limited to where they are by the wheel wells.

I've not looked into auto dimming rear view but that is a good idea. I am sure that there are aftermarket mirrors available. The rain sensor may be a tough one depending on how the technology works. Good thoughts Al

What about radio installations? Communication is important, so if requested, could you do a slick CB/HAM radio installation behind the dash with remote-mounted heads?

Power heated leather seats are a nice creature comfort of course.

To be honest the newest car I've ever owned is our current 2003 Jetta, so I'm not terribly familiar with these new fangled features

There's a mod to make the window switches auto up in the 80 section.

I like when cars have the turn signals set up so that a momentary flick flashes them 3-5 times for passing. Not sure what that entails.

A switched light on the inner tailgate that would illuminate the lower gate and/or ground when it's open is nice. Really nice if it's dimmable.

Led entry lighting without the overheads when the doors open would be nice for those of us with exploding-star level LED overheads. That should be easy enough.

More storage in the rear quarters. I'm lazy so I just removed the trim panels. Covert and discreet would be better.

I personally think the hood and fuel door levers are backwards.

Johnny's right on with his comm thought.

A receiver hitch properly done in the pintle location using the stock bumper would save a lot of rear clearance for unlifted vehicles if it's possible.

With all the talk about seats, I'm surprised nobody mentioned an armrest.

And tail fins. Definitely tail fins.
