Hi there fellow Cruiserfans!

About 2 years ago i bought this 1982, 4.0 aftermarket turbo 2h, hj60 for a pretty fair price i thought at that time. I was, and still am, a student wich means i don't have a lot of money to spend. In fact, considering Dutch gasprices, cartaxes and so on i probably shouldn't even be driving this kind of car;)

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-l0X1MNxfdjI/S7zrSe5D4aI/AAAAAAAAAEI/uJeVccB4svA/s922/IMAG0008.jpg

As soon as i had it on a lift i noticed how bad it actualy was. Cracks in my chassis, wholes in my doors, rockerpanels and fenders. I think It was the worst piece of rust anybody had ever seen.

But it whas my piece of rust, i had been waiting to by one for over 10 years, and i was going to drive a cruiser no matter what, so i started to fix things one by one.

New breaks;)

The pictures you see are dated from April to july 2010. After that time a lot has changed such as the interior, the dash and the headlights. But the rust never stopped. It became even worse and i'll probably be sitting outside once i have washed it since the paint and the dirt are the only 2 things holding my bodyparts together.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eJjbPCSp3CY/TDss7J8jQtI/AAAAAAAAANM/9Qs8gD3uSug/s565/IMAG0029.jpg

Now it's time to take the whole thing apart, and to give this baby a good make-over to last another 30 years. Still don't have a lot to spend, but a bit of internetsearching can help quite a lot!

I bought a donorcruiser in France last week and starting from next saturday i'll take both cars apart and try to make one awsome cruiser from the best parts combined.

I'll be posting more pictures in the coming weeks. Various threads in ih8mud helped me out with lots of things. This might help somebody else.

hope you'll enjoy the results!

I have done a few of these projects, and it helps to have a rust free donor vehicle, you made the right choice.

I love the picture of the XXj74 towing your new 60 series home, you can't get away with that here in the states.

I took a quick look at your projects, looks awsome! I love the rebuild 12ht, might be a future project. I think i'm pretty lucky as my 2h engine only had driven 164.000 original miles. The turbo had been added at around 100.000 miles.

I'll post some pictures later on the day showing the present condition of my car. You might want to prepair yourself;) Holland isn't the best place to keep your car in mint condition. The climate here gives it around the same conditions as parking it in the sea every night.

The donorcar isn't completely rustfree, it still needs two new fenders and 2 new rear screen arches. Both results of putting the fender flares on too hasty. I found A LOT of wiring behind the dash and under the engine hood. Think it might take a while to figure that out. The donorcar used to be a factorybuild 12ht. But the previous owner took it out to put it in a XXJ-73. This might cause some challenges later on.

The car towing the 60's wagon is my dad's 1991 HZJ-73. It has a non aspirated 1HZ 200.000 miles 'new' engine running perfectly! Only problems with it are
the front fenders, they're pretty much gone, and the radiator is giving up.

to help with pictures maybe you should use imgur.com/

type like this without the space and link to image in the middle. no spaces. best if you click advanced reply and just click the picture icon and copy and past the image link.

Just trying to help because i am keeping an eye on this thread seems like it will be super cool.

It looks like you might have forgotten to use the [/IMG] at the end of the image link

thanx for the help Conkhi! now let's try this!

my dad's 35 year old speakers! they look awfull, waste way too much space, but
the sound is awsome! still going to replace them. time for something new:)

i got the turbo-part from a junkyard last year. looks great, does absolutely nothing!

the complete body was stripped in a few hours. now it's time to think of a way to
lift the body off. this might get tricky.

it started raining at about 3pm and ofcourse as soon as we had the tent ready, the sun came back again:frown:

I love how accessible diesels are in other parts of the world but not in the US. I bet at least one of these has a 5-speed too? I'm glad the rest of the world can get these things at their junkyards while we only have a couple of sources for the ENTIRE country. Can you hear the sarcasm bell? Makes me really friggin' envious.

Whewwwww. Glad I got that rant out of my system. Seriously, though good luck with the project. Its hard trying to be a student, work on the landcruiser and potentially need to go to work to pay for both.

Perhaps I missed it, however are you swapping the good body onto the original frame of the blue truck? If so why, since that frame seemed to have a lot of rust?

Zack

The diesels are indeed pretty accessible here. But the fact that it's just as hard to find a working A/C around here as it is for you to find a diesel might cool you down a bit;) It's hot very often, but when it is, it's also a relivtive humidity of 95%. So A/C would be kind of nice:frown:

Currently no job in fact, but i'm selling everything thats left for a pretty good price. Didn't pay all that much for the donorwagon so i have a bit to spend, a lot of pretty good tools, but most importantly: 4 weeks, 14/7= 392 hours of time too spend on this good old Toyota Land-Ruster!!!!!;)

Some tools so far:

- Compressor
- Paintgun
- Sandblaster
- (air driven) sander
- some powertools

Mig/Mag welder is coming next week i hope.

I am in fact planning to put the new body on my old chassis. It's been fixed pretty good last year, you'll see later on. It's going to be sandblasted, coated and painted again. Besides, you wouldn't want to see the chassis from the donorwagon.

Even if the chassis would have been better then mine, i still wouldn't have a choice to use my old frame. We have a tax that's called "ownerships-tax". It basicly is forbidden in Europe to ask for taxes on your car, but the government dicided not to care, simply change the name and keep it. For instance, if my cruiser would be from 1987 or later, i would have to pay about 240 dollars a MONTH just to look at it! i'm pretty lucky my cruiser is from 1982 (wich means no taxes), the donor isn't. The diesel costs around 7 dollars a gallon at the moment, so that's already enough punishmend for me;)

I'm planning to make it just a little bit higher. Maybe 1,5-2,0 inches. A bodylift would be the cheapest i guess. I'm going to try to keep that a s cheap as possible, but it has to be done safely. Any suggestions? I can get my hands on solid aluminium pieces. Could that be a good option?

I'm buying a welder next week, and i'm going to try to fix my fenders and rear arches. I've done a bit of welding last year, but never something realy difficult as bodywork. Is this going to be a big problem you guys think?

Hello Thomas

Nice to see another dutch guy over here, if you want info on bodyrepairs you can call me, i have a restaurationshop near Den Bosch and specialised in Landcruisers. It's not so hard to do as long as you do it well, otherwise you are back on it in a year or 2.
Look me up at Nc-creations.nl or mail me

Greetings
Niels Jansen

Hoi Thomas,

Im also in the middle of welding.
Well just over the middle as I will start grinding and start emptying tectyl spraycans and sticking silence tape.

I used wire with gas and a helmet that automatically moves from normal to dark, it has taken al lot of time but just keep on working and make people help you (or :flipoff2: them)

Body is Off!!!!! Managed to collect 2 of my friends and my neighbour, and we lifted it off this morning! Thought we wouldn't make it with 4 people, but my neigbour convinced us he is ''The Hulk".......So after a few minutes of planning the lift we took it off the FUN WAY!

The chassis is, as i told before, in pretty good condition. A classmate of me offered to help me so he's starting to sand the chassis tonight.

Thanx for all the replies people! I might drop by some time soon Niels! Always good to see how things should be done;) I wish i had enough money to buy new parts or hire somebody to do it for me. But times aren't that great now;)

I'll post some pictures again tomorow!

I see my post from yesterday didn't make it! Those damn smartphones!:bang:

Hi there Sporty! I started sanding it the day before yesterday. It is a hell of a job! I'm buying some sandblastingsand today, might make it a little easier.

After the sanding i'm going to treat the chassis with this stuff:

OWATROL OIL : Colourless, penetrating and isolating rust inhibitor

It's amazing what this stuff does! I used it before on my chassis and lot's of other parts. It's probably something similar to Brantho i guess?

it has been raining a lot the last few days, but that gave me time to clean, sand and paint some small parts for the new body. Such as my powerclutch, never knew the 60 came with powerclutch untill i saw it on my new cruiser. Anyway, it looks great!

Got some new headlights to! I'm planning to buy 4 new headlightsockets, and make them light up all together. I think i have a better view on the road from now on.

I have a question. I would realy like to repaint my engine. But i can't take it apart completely because i don't have any new gaskets. Would it be ok to take off the fuelpump for instance? And the air-intakemanifolt? It's leaking anyway cause of the turbopressure.

Hi there everyone!

I haven't been posting anythinglately so it's time to upload some pics of my progress! Chassis and engine are now in good condition and the body is switched. I managed to make some kind of custom body lift wich turns out to be just perfect!
I'm having zome trouble connecting everything so thats my biggest challenge right now.

Thanx man! Sorry but I wouldn't share to sell it. I paid about 13 dollars for it (don't hate me :p ), and a big hole in my roof isn't all that pretty:)

I'm trying to connect all the wires today but it isn't very easy. The body is a 61 (original turbodiesel) and I have a 2h engine. Besides that the car is about 9 years newer than the old one, so a few things won't fit. I might have to use my pre-heatingrelays from the old cruiser. Anyone any advice?

Looks like a fun project, good job!

You need the old crap or fix a home made manual glowing.
file.php

What the pre heat does on 14 volt glowplugs is 3 seconds 21 volt, then it gradually goes down to 2 volt and then switches off after 30 seconds.
With warm start it starts with 21 Volts and then stops.
I have a 24V light next to my steering wheel to know what the system is doing.
The red (with yellow cap) wire goes from one glowplug to the cabin and black - from battery (diff breather on the right):
