Based on a thread from 2013 it looks like I'll be able to install '73-'79 bucket seats in my '71 FJ40 and, with a simple modification, retain the toolbox under the seat. I'll be installing an H41 with a drum parking brake split transfer case, which came with the parking brake cable, and I have a spare parking brake lever assembly from my '89 FJ62 donor vehicle. Has anyone used an FJ6X floor mounted parking brake lever in an FJ40 instead of using an FJ40-specific lever?

I was thinking of the same idea a few days ago. I was in need of a park brake lever for a hj47,so pulled the lever from a 60 for comparison, while not a direct fit for post 79 40 series Cruisers as the mounting bolt spacing are wider, I can't see why the 60 lever couldn't be made to fit a pre 79 Cruiser.

I can post some comparison pics if you like?

I'm doing similar this week. I have '81 60 axles, put under 45 LPB and found the cable to rear axle brake too short to make it to the tranny hump.
There is just enough room between the bench seats to mount it in front of seat belt.
Had to drill 1" hole in back of cab. :(

I'm hoping that with the transfer case brake and rear axle brake, I'll be able to get out on our really step boat ramps without as much worry.

Might just be a option of using cable and handle from a 74-78 with a four speed. Routing is different and goes down thru the floor but might just reach. @nogo might know which direction the cable mounts on a 78. Believe out the left side then over to the right side. Those are probably a little longer cable. You can mount a handle on the transmission hump. Will require some metal work and the 71 has a lower transmission cover making clearance under the floor tighter. Believe last few weeks there was a thread about doing this. It showed how tight it was to the transfer case.

Should have said a RHD 78. On my 68 was able to get the stock cable to work. RHD from a 71 or close year might work with your current handle. No rerouting required.

Mock up of the 60 series lever on a pre 79 floor hump.

If using the standard split case cable I believe the portion indicated by the red line on the 60 lever mechanism would need to be removed.

Thanks for the input and photos. I think the easiest thing for me to do would be to source a used lever assembly from the appropriate model year FJ40. The '71 already has a later FJ40 transmission hump - I replaced the original when I installed the 4-speed and transfer case from a '78 FJ55. The drum parking brake split case came from a mid-'80s BJ45, so I don't know how or if that complicates things. I'll take a look at the online parts diagrams and other Land Cruiser references I've accumulated over the years. Next best option, and fairly straightforward, would be to use/modify as necessary the spare FJ62 lever I already have.

i had a parking brake like that in my 70 fj40 mine was from a 79 or 80 fj 40 also i use the stock 79 cable and other parts just had to do some cutting and make mounting brackets

Thanks, so it should be fairly easy for me to work something out, one way or another.

I did some more searching here on MUD and I think I'm set w.r.t. the parking brake lever and cable for my '71 FJ40 upgrade. It seems that the original dash mounted parking brake lever and cable would work great with my split case drum parking brake seeing as how the '71 currently has a '78 FJ55 H42 and one-piece transfer case with drum parking brake. I'll have to verify the cable length and routing, and the orientation as the cable exits the drum to see if my current set-up will work without modification.
