FJ25 from E-bay

I did buy a 1959 recently but it was carried by Toyota into 1961 when they finally wholesaled it so it was titled as a 1961. My title from New Mexico shows it to be a 1961 even though it has a 1959 serial number. I have not yet taken any pictures but you can look it up on E-bay by putting in this auction number and there you can find some fairly good pictures of it: 270220997070

I have just finished arranging for it to be shipped East. At first I was thinking about having it sent to a Land Cruiser specialist and having some work done on it but several of the FJ25 group talked me out of that. So, I am sending it to our family farm in Ohio and will be doing some of the work myself.

Jim helped me understand that I need to find a split hood. Mike in CT helped me by sending me a list of things that are not original on it. Steve in GA helped my by explaining what I needed to do to rebuild the wheel cylinders. I also need a hood insignia, spare tire mount and rear seats for the 25 that I know of now.

Actually I have not even seen this vehicle myself yet, but I did talk to the man who previously owned it five different times including a conversation I had with this him just this morning. He was the third owner and he bought it in 1999. I think it has rolled over at least once so it has a minimum of 145,000 on it. I will probably not see it until late April or early May. Promise I will take a lot of pictures as I will, no doubt, need a lot of help finding all the original pieces it is missing. Hope to restore the body at some point but not necessarily the engine. Still not sure how far I will go with this. God willing I will probably make a gift of it to my son when he finally gets home from the Army.

In the mean time, please check out the pictures while the E-bay auction is still posted and please send me all the advice you can about it and especially let me know where I can find any of the missing OEM pieces I need to restore it. Anyone know what the original color pallet was for 1959? And thanks for all the help I have already gotten! Rick

Welcome Rick!

Keep us posted. Rick, I'm going to copy your introduction into a new thread.........just so you're not forever known as "25 on ebay".

:confused:Who's this Steve in GA?(just kidding)

OK, take these as constructive, in no way negative.

Besides the stuff you mentioned, looks like you'll need seats, big window carb, rear tail lights, pedal pads, two original rims, water outlet, radiator cap, and somehow the gasket on the tranny hump was installed on top?...........................not bad considering. Talk to the owner again and make sure he doesn't have the rims (any condition) or carb stored somewhere. You can find the small stuff in the parts number thread...........order it while you can. Those pieces and the horn button are an easy fix and they'll make you feel good.
:)

The truck has been sprayed the biege color. They did a really thorough job, so thorough I can't see the original color. The entire body (other than the firewall area) including the frame should be one color. You'll probably find it underneath. Original colors are believed to be only green, red, white and a funky grey. I'm going to go way out on a limb and guess..............green was the original color.:D

Hey Rick, great buy...hope you and your son get years of wheeling out of her

How far you go is up to you, but with so few around I'd keep her all original.

She does look real nice, so make good on those picts when you get her home...the ones I saved off ebay just won't be enough ;)

Oh and welcome!

Hey Rick, Congrats on a real nice 25. I'm hoping you get it all back to it's original shape and enjoy years of good wheeling. I do have an original FJ25 split hood in excellent condition that I was going to hang onto just in case I ever needed it for my wagon, but since you have a 25 in need of a hood, I'll sell it to you if you're interested. This is my first post in a long long time, but welcome to the board.

Gene

Rick,

I got your email and the list that Mike sent you of the things you're missing on your 25.

Here's what I have: Split Hood, Hood Emblem

Here's what I know I can get: Apron Emblems, Tail Lights

I think I can get: chrome hood ornament, horn button, glass bowl fuel filter, tire carrier, body reflectors, and original wipers. I'll take your list over to Marv's and see if he has anything else. I'm going over there on Tuesday.

Gene,

Double check on the hood hook locations on that hood. Rick doesnt have an oil bath air filter so no drivers side air hole in the apron.

I have an extra fuel filter bracket as well as the repro parts I've had done. Looks like you'll need to try and find a stock set of fuel lines too.

Check the center arm for slop in the steering. Chances are it will need a rebuild. Get CCOT's kit, its the best one out there by far.

As for brake work, read up about whitepost restorations and what they can do to your cylinders and masters. I have a shop here that re-lined my brake shoes. Some one probably has a core set to loan you to get redone to limit down time. Brake drums can also be re-lined if they're too thin.

Mike,

Was the the non-air intake apron a FJ25 option, or are you saying that the aprons on Rick's 25 are not original along with his hood. If his aprons have been switched with the hood, I could pull the 25 aprons off my 40 and send those as well.

Wow, you guys are amazing, without your help there would be little or no chance of restoring the BubbaMobile back to stock!

I think the first investment I need to make is to find a service and parts manual, otherwise I am going to be constantly challenged to keep up with the conversation. Does anything like that exist for a FJ25?

Trying to attach a pic of engine compartments of my FJ25 and a 1960 FJ 25 for comparison.

Service manual? Short answer is no. Hopefully if someone turns one out they'd be willing to share. SOR has a reprint of the tranny and electrical service pamphlets.

Parts manual - you have a better chance. They occasionally come up on Ebay, the microfiche is usually available there, it is just a fiche made from the last paper manual. Several of us have it, no one has sat down and scanned the whole thing though. Most of the numbers are no good, but there's great pictures! ;)

The intake apron was an FJ25 option WITH an oil bath air filter.

Rick's looks to have a paper filter since I see an orange ring in his housing. If this is the case, then his aprons would be correct and should be the same as an FJ40. Can someone verify this? I assume that the hood hooks are in different places depending on whether the FJ25 had the apron intake or not.

FJ25 Tail Lights

Mike or Gene (or anybody else for that matter),

Which FJ25 tail lights are correct? The ones on the 1959 or the ones on the 1960? Or, was there a change at the port made by Toyota before they were sold to dealers? Both vehicles were sold to dealers in 1961 and therefore titled as 1961 but the serials tell the real story. Appreciate your opinion, thanks very much, Rick

Certainly not the one in the 1960 picture. :hillbilly:
Maybe the lower one, I can't see them in the pic.

Here is a reproduction on an original bracket in the original location (bolted up to the body). All of the US FJ25's had this light. One of our earliest repro efforts..................so now there are part numbers for the light located in the parts number sticky at the top of the section. If you don't have brackets, you'll have to beg for a set or have someone make you a pattern, easy to make.

Thanks Jim, now I know I need to add a set of tail lights to the my list of parts needed to restore these. Rick

If you look in the classifieds you find a link to the brackets someone made...not stock, as they were made from 3/8 stock, but they look OK. I'm hunting for original brackets myself. If I can find even one, or a tracing/pattern and good pictures, I should be able to make copies.

Dean, I will take a pair of brackets if you make them. What do we do about the lights, are they still available someplace? Rick

Dean, Rick needs different brackets than the FJ40. I'll post a picture later. Rick, didn't your 25 have brackets?
