BRIGHT headlights!

Hmmm. Ordered a full set from candlepower after reading the stellar reviews here. I'll be pissed if I just dropped another hundred on the hundred for nothing...!

Hope it works out! I was really disappointed when I got them a few years ago and almost immediately made the jump to Hid's.

A short plea from an older driver (me, and likely millions of others on the road); don't go overboard on brightness. Lights that are aimed too high or that are superbright or that are pin-point intense all produce a glare that is obnoxious to older eyes.

Don't worry- I hate obnoxious lights. Btw- where in michigan? I'm from Howell...

I bot the phillips HIR2 low beams and installed and my observation is yes there is a minimal increase in light but its not eye popping by any means.

Agree. Had them in my 80 and barely noticed a difference.

I have to wonder if they could possibly be fakes I read about? The real ones put out significantly more light than standard or legal, measured by sellers and enthusiasts. I really can't look at my truck and say exactly how much brighter they are, but reflective road signs are so much brighter they're annoying when I drive the truck with HIR bulbs.

Yours are probably not aimed properly.

HID Retro all the way :)

Not for the faint of heart taking a dremel to the headlights. All things considered a PnP HID kit will net you some increased lumens, but with a huge drawback of beam pattern. The hot spots created by the multi-pount reflector on the 100's is quite intense. The light dispersion will be uneven and send huge amounts of light scatter into the eyes of oncoming.

Example:

PnP on the 100 will generate a lot of foreground light, and severe hotspots. This will be the same issue with LED plug and play. LED PnP kit will actually be worse since the light source is in such a different location than the OEM Halogen bulb (9006).

Who knows... Candlepower sold them to me...

But, it sounds like things have improved since I bought mine years ago. And, people continue to be happy with the improvements. My experience just left me underwhelmed for the cost.... Sort of seemed like a lot of hype and overly expensive for what I received.

I bought my previous set from Candlepower and John Deere in '09. The measured light output was almost twice as much as stock on the highs, and more than twice as much on the lows. Without opening my old optics textbook, that's not a lot more visually, but is noticeable. If they last three years and give me a noticeable improvement in night visibility, they are well worth it. But I do a lot of late-night driving on the highway in deer country.

I run my low-beams day and night, and it is one of the lows that burned out after three years. I'm expecting the highs to last a lot longer.

I'm with 2000UZJ, HID projector retrofit all the way. In my eyes, the best bang for your buck when upgrading your lighting. Takes a little time but is very easy to do. Very wide beam pattern and excellent output from these little projectors. This is the third retrofit I've done.

Very interesting. How many 's?

On a scale of 1-5 's, it's a 2.5  job. It's more time consuming than anything. The first retrofit I ever tried took me about a week, working on it after work and when I had time. I purchased a set of OEM lights off of ebay and did the retro on them. By my third retro, I have it down to about 3.5 hours, maybe 4 if you count how many 's are consumed. I highly recommend it to upgrade your lights. I was never a fan of upgrading lights until my buddy did a retro on his Taco and I was amazed at how it looked. I'm hooked now. For more info on how to do it, check this out: http://www.theretrofitsource.com/pdf/trs_tech/Morimoto_Mini_H1_Retrofit.pdf

There are a few slight modifications to the 100 headlights that need to be made. You need to grind down the socket where your stock 9006 bulb used to go. That will allow enough room to put the projector in and tighten it down. I didn't do a write up for my LC but here is the write up I did for my first retro on my T4R: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-g...done-mini-morimoto-h1-retrofit-pic-heavy.html

Just put the HIRs in that I got from Candlepower. They are brighter, but not a ton. I put one in and compared it with the old one. A guess would be 20% on the lows. Don't see much difference in the brights, but the old brights did ok anyways. A quick drive showed that they (lows) are slightly brighter, but mostly in the "hotspot" area. I'll drive them for a while, but for now they leave me feeling... "eh."

A lot of the HIDs I see look way too bright. When they wash the roadway/trail out and turn the street signs into blinding reflectors... way overkill. We'll see how long I can live with these.

I just installed the Philips HIR from amazon, I didn't take any pics of before or after, but they made a huge difference. They are so much brighter than what the previous owner had installed. I spent around $35-40 and it was well worth it for me.

What was the part number for the hir from amazon. I want to put these in my 2000 cruiser. What do I need to buy to do the lows and the highs? What needs to be modified? Is the bulb modified or does something on the truck need to be modified? Thanks

Stock bulbs are 9005 and 9006.

You just need to dremel, file, or nip some of the plastic of the housing portion of the bulb to fit into the stock slots. 9011 and 9012.
