Wife just called me at work, says the 80 is making a horrible noise when she hits the brakes.

I can only imagine it's the front brakes. Haven't changed them since I bought the rig 2 years ago.

Feels like one of my kids is sick.

hopefully "horrible noise" means sqealing from the wear indicator and not metal on metal.

If it's just swapping pads, it takes no more time than it does to lift the wheel and remove the tire. Except for the time it takes Uncle Dan to ship you the pads.

It's gotta be the pads. Just took it for a spin, rears sound bad. Not horrible, but it's definately the rear. Going to swap F and R this weekend.

Never done brakes on this rig. Anything special about the 97? Getting OEM parts tomorrow (sorry Dan, can't wait for shipping). Should I get the shims? Not sure if I will need them.

OH yeah. The first thing I did when I came home was started looking at the cruiser. Wife comes out in the garage and says, "Wish you cared this much about me when I am sick." Thinking quickly, not wanting to blow my cover I reply, " Are you kidding me? This is your safety!"

She smiled and came over and kissed me. Not like that comment was totally un-true. Hell, I feel like taking the cruiser some soup!

I don't believe you can swap the front and rear pads. IIRC, the rears are notably smaller. Also, Cdan's probably cheaper even with fast shipping.

I got my pads at shucks they were about $90 for both sets.
The rear brakes are so easy you dont even have to take the caliper off. Unless you have to turn the disc. The rest of the job is pretty standard stuff.

Not swap, replace both. Local dealer wants $68 per axle minus 25% (convinced him to give me a TLCA discount ;) ) So about $100 for both.

Who's Dan?

Sorry guys,

I'm new to the list and lame, not meaning to break a thread, but can you tell me who is Dan? I need a good place to buy parts rather than the overpriced Toyota dealer. Thanks.

Look here.

Has someone written up the brake job? Do I need an FSM to do it right? Special tools? What about using the 100 series pads on the 80...anyone still recommend that. What say ye C-dan?

You can poke around this site and find enough stuff to help you through the front brakes. No SSTs if you aren't removing the rotors, and its Lego simple. If you replace the rotors, the book or faxed pages are necessary IMO.

The 100 pads are a MUST, especially if you are resurfacing or replacing rotors. After 6 FJ-80s, I just added 100 pads for the first time and I cannot believe the difference in stopping power. But you should get a FSM so that you have the "gospel".

Dan,

I have 100 series pads on mine - it's been more than a year, I think; much improved braking performance & plenty of pads' life left. If you're going this route, gotta have new rotors or resurfacing the old ones though (which requires special tool, and maybe FSM that I have). I'm from the south bay, so if you need the tools or help, PM me.

Frank.

That would be great to get some help. I assume once you pull the rotors you have to take them somewhere to get resurfaced. So the truck would be down for a coupleof days...right? I'd like to go to the 100 pads cause it seems to make sense but right now my brakes are fine and so I'll just have to wait to spend that $$$ I don't have.

Uncle Dan hooked me up.

Going with the 80 pads. I'll swap down the road once I get the :princess: her 100 series and I get my 80 back.

And..........we have brakes :D

Rear pad was GONE

:princess: was educated

Why not just replace the Rotors. I bought new ones from Dan rather than resurface. Since you are taking them off, you won't have to worry about it for years to come.

I agree with the 100 Pads

If there is a need to replace the rotors.
How hard is it to separate the old rotors from the hubs? They look pretty tight. Special tool?
Any write up about replacing rotors?

Thanks,
