it appears my brake master cyl. is leaking out of the top of the rear reservoir cap..the cap seems fine. whats making this happen? im losing a LOT of fluid and thats the only place i see a leak in the system. any thoughts? she is a '74 '40 with drums all around. thanx.

Is the front reservoir going down? Suspect it may be leaking internally-pushing fluid from the front to the rear.

If it is actually coming out near the cap, then your cap is bad, or there is a crack in the reservoir.

thanks folks... no it is the rear res that is going down. and yes it appears to be coming out AT the rear cap. so prolly it is the res itself or the cap as you say. i think what i should do is clean the thing immaculate tomorrow and then watch it closely for a bit.

If you can pump the brake peddle up by puhing it few times before heavy braking the master cylinder could need a rebuild. The master will leak down down the fire wall both sides if there's a problem so check the interier for a tell tale.

Sounds something similar to what I was experiencing with my 78 fj40. My rear reservoir was always needing to be topped off every other day with break fluid. I went over the lines with a fine tooth comb along with the rear drums to see if there was any fluid contained inside of them. I did not notice any brake fluid on my fire wall either. For a quick fix I took a plastic sandwich bag and cut a circular piece out of the sandwich bag which was slightly bigger than the top of the rear reservoir, then installed the rubber cap back on. So after about two weeks of driving I've not had to add any more brake fluid. I found after some trial an error that the plastic sandwich bag worked the best, not the plastic sandwich wrap that you pull off a role. Seemed to thin and the reservoir still needed to be topped off frequently. Not the correct fix but has seemed to hold so far, just don't want to pay more for shipping than for the actual rubber cap. I must say that before I start my day I do lift the hood just to be sure of the brake fluid levels just as a precaution.
