Sounds something similar to what I was experiencing with my 78 fj40. My rear reservoir was always needing to be topped off every other day with break fluid. I went over the lines with a fine tooth comb along with the rear drums to see if there was any fluid contained inside of them. I did not notice any brake fluid on my fire wall either. For a quick fix I took a plastic sandwich bag and cut a circular piece out of the sandwich bag which was slightly bigger than the top of the rear reservoir, then installed the rubber cap back on. So after about two weeks of driving I've not had to add any more brake fluid. I found after some trial an error that the plastic sandwich bag worked the best, not the plastic sandwich wrap that you pull off a role. Seemed to thin and the reservoir still needed to be topped off frequently. Not the correct fix but has seemed to hold so far, just don't want to pay more for shipping than for the actual rubber cap. I must say that before I start my day I do lift the hood just to be sure of the brake fluid levels just as a precaution.
