I've searched and read but need to ask:

Since my Brake Master Cylinder is leaking out the back of the MC down the floor board of the tub should I buy a new MC or will a rebuild kit take care of it?

65 FJ40 - stock brakes
 
Depends on how many times it has been rebuilt, and what the inside walls of the cylinder looks like. I rebuilt for years, and finally a couple of years ago bought a new one.

Hint: If you are going for a re-man, don't buy from Checker/Schucks/Kragen's. I have not had good luck with their supplier on most re-man stuff.

I'm running an early 69 with the 9mm brake lines, same as you.
 
Do you still have the stock single master? If so you can buy a replacement from toyota for not that much.
 
I am just now finishing up my brake system. I went to Napa and got a new/ rebuilt master for around $50 after core exchange.
 
I must be in some black hole....I went to the toyota dealership today, Napa, Autozone, and advanced auto....NONE of them could find any parts for my 65 FJ40....NAPA's books didnt go back that far for Toyota and the rest said "discontinued".....What am I missing? Anyone got a Toyota, Napa, or other part # for a Stock, single reservoir Brake master cylinder?

I see people getting all kinds of parts from napa and toyota and checkers? and I keep getting the "discontinued" answer for my '65.....???

I know I can order one online but what gives with Napa, Toyota, etc.?
 
cause napa and the others don't even go back that far for a cruiser. Even toyota's epc only goes back to something like 68..

I believe the single res 9mm master is 47200-35011. Get your dealer to get you a discount or order from c-dan. should be like $85-90.
 
I might have the napa part # on the box in the shop. I'll look in the morning. I got the one for my '65 in July from napa. And it was an Aisan! I had bought a new Taiwan copy from an LC parts house and it leaked the day I installed it. The napa one had the 10mm fitting, so I made a new line from a stock length tube and put a 9mm on one end and 10 on the other. In actuality the one they gave me must have been from a later model because of the fitting size, but the conversion was easy.
 
I don't mind the difference in the fitting...I've got fittings and can make up a line in my sleep....:) If you've got the Napa part # that would be great...Otherwise I'm going the cdan route...
 
I have TWO master cylinders from that vintage vehicle, one near brand new, that were both removed in good working order from project rigs at my shop. Call me if you're interested.

This also might be a good time to consider an upgrade yourself tho. Take a look at LCJ's thread in the 45 forum.

Oh yes. The early year FJ40 Black Hole. I've got a 66 and have found the same problem trying to order parts from Toyota or Napa. Here's what I've done and it works some of the time. Use the SOR catalog as a reference to find when Toyota changed up parts. If your 1965 used the same part as a 1970, then I just tell the guy at the counter I've got a 1970. You've got to be sure they did use the same part. 1968 seems to be the magic year for 40's part numbers to begin. The most common year I tell the parts guy is a 68 because its still early enough to be the same as mine most of the time and late enough to be in the system.
 
Is this the correct assembly order for this brake master rebuild kit? There is a thick rubber washer at the bottom of the pic but I cant figure out where it should go....

Do I take out all the parts from the old and discard (other than the plunger) or do i keep some parts to reuse?

Cant make much detail out in the diagram from SOR or MAF....Honed and ready to rebuild...just want to make sure the assembly order is correct...

I think thats a copper washer...at least thats whats on mine....I'm assuming the layout is correct...the pieces from the spring to the left are not quite the same as what I've got and I don't want to leave out the thick rubber washer if It goes somewhere.....That is the correct diagram though...Thanks
 
cap?

doesnt just seal the cap does it? 18 looks like a solid rubber cap though
 
No, It isnt that big...Its the rubber washer in the bottom of the picture I took above...Its about 3/16" thick...thought it went in the cylinder somewhere but....????
 
Does anybody know where you can order parts for the cylinders as I only require the seal for the plunger in my 1967 master cylinder? I have also been unable to find a supplier in Canada for repair parts or a complete master cylinder. Does anybody know of any Western Canada suppliers for Landcruiser parts?

I got the same problem and can't see where it would go. My old one did not have it!
