I have an opportunity to pick up a '73 '40 series that has missing parts. I think I have most of these from my '67 FJ45LV build but I don't know if they cross over. Things like the front drum stuff, brake and clutch masters, altentator?

Yes and No...

As best I know. From parting out a 77 fj45 and owning a 74 fj40.

Front drums on a fj 45 are quite different.
Alternator and Clutch should be compatible.
Brake master may have a different bore.

I'd personally swap in front discs and a chevy alternator.
I've gone four wheel discs and would NEVER go back to drums.;)

Hi All:

Wasn't there a change-over in the size of the brake lines around 1968? From the older 9mm size to the newer 10mm fittings?

Also, a '67 would have the "ball & claw" type front CVs, while the '73 will have the early coarse-spline "Birfield" CVs. Don't know whether this will affect the front drum brake parts or not.

Regards,

Alan

I guess I should clarify that I'm looking at the '40 as something to bash around in. The FJ45LV is getting the full resto. If I have time and the inclination after the '45LV then maybe something with the '40 but for now it would be just getting it on the road. The parts listed are missing from the '40 but excess to the '45LV.

This is correct, concerning the 1977 FJ45; however, the 1967 and earlier FJ45LV wagons used the same brake components as their early 40 series counterparts.

Axle is compatible and will bolt in physically.

Brake lines are not the same; however, this possibly could be as easily remedied by swapping a brake hose from the frame to the axle, provided you can install a later hose into the T fitting on the earlier front axle.

Clutch master/slave: while nearly the same, again, use different sized fittings for the fluid lines/hoses. The master and slave from these will bolt into the same places, respectively.

Alternator should swap over without issue.

Great, that's the sort of info I was looking for.
