I didn't think you needed one on an 80? ie, I think you can just leave it off.
Just take a plasma cutter or grinder to the stock one that's what I did to my Land Cruiser and mini truck. No need to waste money on it. But pretty sure it needs to be there for at least a spacer.

I don't have any to cut and I am not a big fan of not having it there. I think that space need to be filled with something or else dirt and water will work its way into your bearings easier. I need a used pair brake shields or an eliminator kit.
I don't get it. There is no compelling reason to omit the backing plates.
Unless you put FZJ80 rotors and calipers on an FJ80. Other than that I agree, what's there to gain?
I left mine off, no problems what so ever, I took them off because rocks kept getting trapped between my rotor and backing plate

Well that only happend a few times, it was more rocks hitting them into my rotors, I also have wheel spacers and wheels with alot of offset so there pretty wide open
