I just bought a 1965 fj40 all original except for the seats. I had one when i was a teenager and always wanted another 65. I realized i'm getting old and stopping and steering take a lot of muscle. How hard would it be to convert to front discs and power steering. I have gotten spoiled in my 03 jeep with all the power. but it does have rear drums.. thx im in arizona

Both are relatively easily done. For disc brakes I'd recommend finding a 76+ disc 40 axle and also upgrading your master cylinder. Power steering, likely 60/80 series Landcruiser, Scout, or Saginaw. Saginaw has been accused of being driving on Novicane... (no sensation).
There are a million threads on them and check the FAQ. Have a look, see what you can find. If you have trouble post again.

I was reading this last night on Marks Offroad and he brings up some real good points

http://www.marksoffroad.net/FAQ.html

Disc brakes need a brake booster and then you have the problem with the master cylinder getting in the way of the carb. My 1962 is rolling on old 33 12.50 tires and it is easy to turn if it is rolling. Only sitting still would power steering make a difference for me. When I get road tires likely 33 10.50 then it will not be a problem at all. I would drive it and enjoy it while you do some research then decide what it needs.

power steering

I went with sag steering---suits my lazy throwing arm just fine:)

takes mounting a pump (with pulley to drive it), fabbing or buying lines for it, welding a plate for the mount on the frame, bolting it up
then adapting to a steering wheel with a coupler or using a gm or aftermarket column

for discs I am using 60 discs for the front and Posers GM bracket set up in the rear. have to pull out the birfs for this

just do all the research thoroughly before you start so you are happy at the end, lots of tech write ups and some good stuff in the FAQs

Hi All:

Congrats Fjgrrl on your new rig! :)

I'd suggest using stock Toyota front disc brake parts. You will need to switch to a 1969 or later front axle assembly to utilize the front disc brake parts. As has been mentioned by cjgoode one should use a booster with disc brakes. This can be done but is a little bit complicated. I'd suggest getting in touch with Mark @ Mark's Off Road in California; he is an old-school kinda guy that can help with this sorta of swap.

For power steering the so called "mini-truck" conversion with some later year steering parts should work well for your '65. :)

Good luck!

Alan

Definately read the FAQ section piece by piece in order of the things you want to do, it doesn't matter which route you take there is good info on everything.
