I feel like sound hunting is not the best forum quest, but im getting super frustrated with this sound.

1982 hj47 troopy with h55f.

so I dont think it made this sound before around 3 months ago. I thought it was shot motor mounts and the tranny tower hitting the body. They were roasted, and i replaced all with tranny too. didn't stop this sound. I can feel it in my feet on the hardest bumps. seems to make the sound the most when loaded up for camping and aired down as the sound happens most when the car shudders on washboard or consistent hard bumpy road. wont nessisarily make it on a straight hard bump but if the truck wiggles i hear it.

The best description of it is it sounds like if you were to smack the back of an old car seat (40 series seat). the bounce forward shaking parts springish sound. you know?bugugugugy. I fell like the sound is similar to when I let the clutch off right after accelerating sometimes. like if you start moving at a light behind someone and they stop suddenly so you let the clutch off right as its torqueing and it makes a similar bugugugugy sound. I haranged on every part in the engine bay and under my foot area to see if it was something loose. nothing, its all rock solid. Ive had my starter fully loose before like fully bounceing up and down but its not that , shes tight tight. Ill try and record it but I feel like its something inside the bellhousing. I dont know a ton about what goes on in there and what parts are in that region that can make noise. aaaand It just got a new tcase, so the shop had the tranny out and I assume if there was anything sketch in there theyd have called me. its a reputable toyota offroad shop so I got some trust in them. if anyone has had a similar sound or knows more about stuff in the bell housing that could make that noise please let me know. or what could be at he back ass back of the engine between the firewall that might be loose and bouncing but i just cant see it.

thanks

Does the exhaust pipe go under your feet?

We're probably going to need pictures...

Crawl under it and push/pull up/down and sideways on every part. You are feeling for play. Maybe someone forgot to tighten/torque something - stuff breaks due stress cracks etc.

Just a suggestion from someone who had a similar sound that took a long time to track down, check your u-bolts. I had mine on the DS rear axle come loose. Would have bet a lot of money it was drivetrain related. Good luck.

I had a similar sound on a 78 fj40. Went through all previous suggestions plus. Someone on this forum ( I would like to give them credit but I forgot who it was) suggested the hood hinges. Never in a million years I thought that would be the problem. That stopped the thumping.

yeah, thats been done. thats why i think its possibly something inside the bell housing.

Pull the inspection cover and look. A couple weeks ago there was a thread about a clunking/rattling noise emanating from the lower portion of floor boards that the op couldn't find. Someone chimed in that it was the hood hinge bushings. The op replaced them and fixed the issues. Then others did the same with good results.

Hmmmmm, I did build a new front axel to get toyota discs in front around the time this started. That said, I retorqued them not too long ago so they are tight. I thought maybe its the axel moving side to side or something but all the bushings are new, still have their side flanges... doesnt appear to be anywhere for metal to connect. this really sounds like something that is either supposed to be bolted on and is swinging around, or there is something inside the bellhousing like the fork or whatever that has a worn spring or something so it can swing and bounce under enough movement.

When mine was lose, it was the spring seat that had just enough room to separate from the axle housing that was causing the rattle. Re-torqued and it was gone. Doesn't hurt to check them on all 4 corners to rule it out.

today after work Ill grease slip yokes, torque all ubolts, take pics of tranny and under footwell area, do a 7th attempt at chaking every part i can get my hands on and report back. Thanks for everyones input so far. This truck was solid as s***. like driving a hard block of rubber on the roughest of surfaces. so now this noise is just killing me!

Here ya go. Sounds like it's easy to check if it's your problem. Ref post 11 and on

Oh my god if its that ill do a back flip! now i wont be able to get any work done today just thinking about testing this out!!

My 78 had a mystery thumping sound. Had Richard Lillard drive the truck with me. Turned out to be Hood hinges.
