2006 LC with AHC. I wheel it pretty hard. Routinely wheeling and "swinging above my weight" following Rubicons and fully locked frankentrucks through the moonscape terrain here along the western rim of Virginia. I'm a fairly experienced off road driver having had many 40's and 60's through the years. I choose my lines carefully, practice mechanical sympathy and generally go wherever I want on 33's provided my co-driver is sober enough to call the line. But it is annoying. Now, fully half of the people I wheel with have dropped a Benjamin to reserve their Sasquatch edition Bronco. I could too, but I'm a Toyota guy. Not interested in anything else really. But I think the game is about to go next level zombie apocalypse so let's do this.
First, I like the AHC system. So much so that I just had it all replaced. I tow frequently. It's great.

if I wanted to get the lift required to clear 35's, based on my research it looks like stripping out the AHC, going with a 2.5 EMU, diff drop, UCA,s and then realistically a 2" body. Then I need to do ring/pinion etc.

I feel like all of that easily puts me halfway to portals in terms of cost.
So I'm thinking bolt on portals geared for 37's. Cut the fenders and do some flares and call it a day. This is not a daily driver.

Talk me out of it! Go!

Maybe

And those bolt on portals are available where?

This dude just did the Rubicon with 35s and slightly modified AHC.

Also I'm running 35s and I haven't bothered with a body lift yet - just rolled and pulled the fenders and I don't rub much.

I like the concept of portal axles, prob a pipe dream for a IFS 100.

Fwiw- Marks 4wd has developed portal kits for 70 Series- they have all the cool stuff in Oz

I am looking at portal bolt on's ... kind of an interesting idea. However, would require me to swap in a solid front axle first. I am not against converting to a 105 series, but the cost starts to add up and up and up. If it was a ten thousand dollar idea I would be tempted ... but I am afraid it is going to be much more than that. I wish there was a way to keep my AHC with a solid front axle, I love the system butttttt ...

The 105 is a totally different truck. Different frame, different engine, different dashboard. Almost everything is different apart from a similiar body. You can't convert a 100 into a 105.

Dang ... well that sounds more expensive than my wife will entertain. Well then, off to other things ... keep it as a grocery getter.

Lol, 3 posts and hasn't logged in in over 2.5 years. Not likely to get a response here.

There are two companies offering portal axles for the 200. 74Weld and Werewolf. Not the same but could possibly be adapted to fit the 100.

@hoser I have a set ordered from werewolf. They are building custom knuckles to fit a 100 series. They should arrive early May. 74 weld was unresponsive to my emails. Werewolf has been very responsive as well as their US rep, wolfworx with answering questions. I visited Mountain Yotas in Denver to see a set in person, they have a set of Werewolf portals installed on their shop Tacoma running 40s. Dwight was extremely friendly and forthcoming with the instalation process as I was looking do the instal myself. I wanted to see a set in person prior to pulling the trigger. The day I showed up at Mountain Yotas they had just finished installing a fresh set of portals on a customers tacoma and gave me a thorough run down of what their experience doing buisiness with werewolf has been like as well as what their experience with instalations have been like, they had nothing but good things to say. Only cons I could find are price and maintenance, which only entails changing gear oil on regular intervals with your oil changes. I will have to do some fender trimming and cut back my sliders to fit 40s.

Right on! Can't wait to see them. I've casually considered portals for my 200 but I'm holding tight and trying to just keep it an "Expedition" vehicle.

Definitely interested to see the kit and your experience. Please post about it when you do the install! Might be worth starting a whole new thread.

What is the gear ratio change with the portals?

Did you end up getting these installed? Did the work well with the custom knuckles?

Yes, I’m still getting them dialed in. I plan on doing a full write up on the kit & instal.
Here’s some pics:
