So my son's 92 hilux had 4 different paint jobs and he decided to repaint again while he is rebuilding the motor. the old paint jobs were all done in the driveway which equals poor paint jobs - runs, pits, etc.

We used aircraft stripper to go down to bare metal. MY question is how do we prep the metal for good epoxy primer adhesion? I know the metal must be thouroughly clean to make sure the stripper residue is completely removed. What is the best way to clean off the bare metal? I appreciate all the pointers I can get.

thanks,

MEK, methy/ethyl/ketone, solvent should work good. It is serious stuff. I am not sure of any kind of reaction it may have with the stripper.

When I did my zuk tub underbody, I started with wire wheels / torch and scraper, then onto the aircraft stripper, then media blasted with glass. I wiped with Final Wipe, a solvent designed for use just before paint / primer. Then I sprayed with epoxy primer, and then bedliner over the primer. Do not use Lacquer thinner as it leaves a residue which will interfere with primer / paint adhesion.

Media blasting is a PITA and makes a hellofa mess, but it is THE best for primer adhesion......well worth the effort IMO.

Thanks grizzly & spoke rider.

I just use some reducer that I will use for the primer, then I know I'm good. Then just make sure you have the correct mil thickness when laying down the coats. After the primer is down I just let it flash for an hour and start the paint. Remember epoxy primer is more of a sealer, it doesn't fill and the coat before you paint should not be sanded.

A good epoxy primer and hard setting top coat is the only way to go these days.

Thanks snobdds
