Was out in Safford this last weekend. Head gasket went.

Had been running hot on and off lately, drained replaced radiator water Thursday, seemed to be fine driving out to Safford Friday. Did fine on a couple hour excursion. Then, it was running just shy of the 'H' mark. Checked it - no gurrgling, didn't seem excessivly hot, though maybe (hoping) just a bad sensor. Starting going up Mt Graham, loss of power, pegged the temp meter, that's all folks!

Had to rent a U-Haul and a tow dollie to get it back home - then, had to go back out on Sunday in my other car to pick up the family who stayed at the friends house. Long, expensive weekend :)

So, I suppose I take it over to Vern's for a re-do. Already some rings were leaking, so it'll need a complete re-build.

Anybody have a 2F that actualy passed smog here in Phoenix? Not sure even after a complete rebuild this carb'd engine can ever pass smog. I'm almost thinking about just 'moving' to Safford, as it is, as there are no smog requirements there.

Is it even worth it to rebuild the 2F motor?

Smog requirements are based on original specs and weighted for age, as far as I know. If it runs well it should pass easily, especially after a rebuild. You're not expected to compare to a new Prius. :D

I had mine rebuilt after I blew a radiator hose. It never peged just got hot. I had low compression anyway on 6 and some other one and had it torn down and rebuilt here in Tucson. I only needed the topend the bottom was in perfect shape. The head was resurfaced, valve job, rings and some other misc. stuff. The parts were about 1100.00 OEM it was the labor 14.1 hrs that killed 1200.00. I've never had any issue with smog in the years I've owned my 60. I don't have the EGR it was removed. I did replace some stuff which included OEM smog pump, OEM diverter valve, OEM exhaust manifold and exhaust all the way back, and vacum lines and check valves. The only thing I didn't replace was the air rail.
The emissions stuff probably cost as much as the rebuild :)

So, I would say it's possible to have a easily smogable 2f.

Just rebuild it.

Do the smog police even know what they are looking for when doing an underhood 'inspection'? They just seem to look at the engine for a couple minutes, and that's it. Not sure if they know it's supposed to have an air pump or whatever.

I was told they look for the exhaust dilution pump and that it is connected, but I don't know if that is true. I don't think a 60 would pass without one on. I have never had anyone notice the EGR missing who could ever see it with all that spaghetti in the way. I think they look in and see a ton of crap and wounder, What the ?. Then close the hood.

Well, the last time I tried to get it smogged, the hose from the output of the pump to the mixer valves for the air injection had fallen off, appearently. And, the hose to the injection rail had also been disconnected. The smog people didn't even notice the smog pump wasn't doing a thing. Probably just looked to see if was even there, i suppose.

Does the EGR system hurt the preformance?

Howdy! Even it the motor is running OK, if the smog junk is not working/connected, that is enough to make it fail the running test readings. When they punch in the VIN, the computer tells them what to look for and where it should be located. Sometimes they are just lazy/don't really care, and they just roll rigs right on thru. They always call out the Supervisor to do the visual check, as they can't find a 76 FJ-55 listed with a V8. John

Coming from a background of running cars with engine swaps that were never sold in the US and therefore not legal... they look for the junk that is SUPPOSED to be there, and as long as it LOOKS functional you will have no problem. The techs all seem to crowd around when your Nissan has a straight six instead of a 4 cyl though; however this was just my experience. :flipoff2:

they have no clue what to look for in a '72 FJ40 - I know for sure since they are always relieved when I tell them there is no inspection requirement anymore at that age  and they go :  pffftttt (no emoticon for that :frown:)

my de-smogged 2F recently passed in the PHX area, but it runs like s*** now :frown:

Well, Vern at Toy Specialists and I will be doing this rebuild. Probably go about .30 - .40 over on the bore, deck the head about .80, and have the entire rebuilt kit, OEM Toyota

Also will be putting in a cam and headers whilst I am at it. Keeping the stock carb for now.

Any advice on a good cam and headers? I already have a 2.5 in cat and 2.5 all the way back

Hopefuly I'll get some $$ scrounged up here soon and start getting this thing torn apart. Should be fun. I've never had the pleasure of rebuilding an engine :)

me and vern were talking about your sitiation today, he rolled his eyes and said with a sigh, yup, i'll prolly be rebuilding it.:grinpimp: we then went on to talk about the possibility of adding EFI to it while he's doing the build, start saving you pennies cause we already made plans:flipoff2:

Oh, you must be the guy with the camo 55 vern mentioned :)

This is gonna about bust me just doing the rebuild. But, probably, I'll try to do the TBI conversion later on. At least I know the engine will be good...

leopard spots guys geez, leopard spots. try to do something different and they think your rig has siphylus or somethin.

I think it’s more like tetanus that most worry about around your rig!
