Should I ask to see the cracked heads ? If I ask, are they required to show them to me ? Or do they remachine them ?
Thank you,
Matt

Matt, I would think that would be appropriate to look at. Be advised that cracks in heads can be almost microscopic or very visible. I seriously doubt that the dealer machines cracked heads...for one, the first thing to do is to weld the crack, then grind the weld, then machine the head, etc. I think it is probably much more cost effective to replace the head. I had a head crack on an old Mercedes Coupe I've been restoring. In this case the only thing to do was to weld, grind, machine. It turned out to be a tricky process. I'm still super surprise that the head cracked!
By law the shop is to hang on to the parts for you to inspect, You have the right to see anything they may say is the problem. Take the time off and look at the crack. Only until you say they can throw the parts away can they discard them. If you leave with out them asking and then come back with in 30 (if I remember right) they need to have them. It is better for the shop to ask so they do not have to store parts. How did they discover the crack, It would have to be visual inspection. So if they can see it you can too. Aluminum has to use die to find the crack if it went to a machine shop, no magnaflusing these head. later robbie
Wow, Robbie, I was not aware of that legal requirement, thanks for sharing that, and, moreover, thanks for sharing all the time and the advice and assistance that you share on the forum on so many subjects. Not to sound too sappy, but having experts like you on the forum makes it so much more fun and so much more informational for amateurs like me!!! Thanks man. Peace.
Yea the requirement was made to keep shops honest to a point, if there is no intergity in the shop in the first place then it need to be forced in to it some how. Sometimes lawyers acutally help the average guy. Lots of legal stuff the shop has to adhear to. Thanks. later robbie
I beleive this is a federal law, I have lived in a few states and found shops to adhear to this. Ask you local shop as to what there policy is. We have so many laws the it is hard to keep up with all of them. Any how the shop that has the cracked head needs to show this to the gentleman. later robbie

I have a 1FZ complete head sitting on a piece of cardboard in my basement that you are welcome to if you need it. I bought it from a LC that was hit in the rear and parted out. I was keeping it as a spare but that thing takes up way too much space! I spray it down with WD40 periodically to keep it nice along with the spare heads for my Shogun.
I'm in Atlanta, GA so that's a little bit of a haul for you but email me if you want me to pack it up and drop it off at a Forward Air depot. For that matter, anyone else who needs it, email me. This thread reminded me of it and I would like to get it out of my basement. (I have the bulletproof '93 LC... )
Powell
(of course, the day after it leaves my basement the head in my '93 will spontaneously crack! :-[ )
First post here--love the forum. Just to contribute mostly to what's been said already on the issue of overheating, I had to replace the radiator on my '96 at about 127K due to a crack that was leaking pretty heavily. :-[ I went with an aftermarket radiator so we'll see how that goes. :-\ I bought the truck used with quite a few miles on it so I really had no idea what the past upkeep was, but it checked out ok with a mechanic b4 I bought it, minus needing new shocks and a leaking rear main which I worked out with the dealership. At least now I know to watch the temp and cooling maintenance pretty closely, thanks to this forum!
When I picked the car up, I asked to see the cracked head. The service guy told me it was sent in to Toyota as a core. Is this right ? Any suggestions ?
In the case of warrany repairs Toyota requires the dealer to retain replaced parts until either the claim is paid or until Toyota requests return of the replaced parts.
Requests for return take a few days MINIMUM.
DEMAND to see the head OR the UPS shipping recored showing that Toyota requested that the head be returnd for inspection.
Man, sounds like those are the kind of guys that give good dealers a bad name. I would definetely press them harder for some proof. Who knows, if they're really screwing you and you can prove it then Mr T may pick up the entire cost.
a cracked head has no core value, I would not think Toyota sells remaned heads even if it was not cracked, if you bought a new head then there is no core charge anyway
I doubt there is anything fishy going on besides the service guy did not want to bother to go through your inspection and told you something to make you go away
