Blown Engine! 100 Series Engine Seized?

To many of these 2UZ are declared dead, that aren't. They do die. But all I've seen are either badly neglected (slow death), low on coolant leading to over heating or error during service. It takes more than just trying to turn the crank by hand or starter, to make the call.

Towed in a non runner and left with non runner. Not fair to declare shop at fault! My bet they felt bad, they made a bad call on starter. But I'm very surprised as far as they went, they didn't point to specifics of seize call!

Thinking there had to be some paperwork. Is there ever not, besides a fluid top or air adjustment? What about checking vin on Toyota owners? Maybe soon to digest on site, but worth a shot. Perhaps ask the dude you know, that "runs" shiit, elsewhere than where you took it, to simply have a review of toyota, to see if logged and provide his offTR suggestion. Like thoughts of if starter was truly replaced? May be worth a pm or CALL moreso, to him.

I agree - If towed in not running and left shop not running, claiming the shop is at fault for a persisting engine problem is unfair and of questionable ethics.

So checked with serpentine and spark plugs off/out not able to turn over with breaker bar, all accessories moved freely without serpentine. Took to a Toyota mechanic for a second opinion he advised it was seized it would not give at all. He recommended he could install a used engine if I go that route.

I don't think I'm going to the trouble/cost of putting a new/used engine in it. In great condition other than the engine if anyone wants to make me an offer as is. Send me a pm if you're interested.

The engine shut off on my 07 with 180k miles on the highway this week. Wouldn't start and battery/alternator are fine. Mechanic says the timing belt wont turn. He will be getting more into the taking off the timing belt and inspecting things. In the meantime, any further ideas or experiences on this thread would be appreciated.

More or less unheard of belt failure at 180K, killing a 2UF VVT. Unless bad parts, improper procedure or both at last T-belt service (90K).

Let us know what he fins. Ask for pictures!.

Thanks - he is going to get more into it next week and I will certainly post an update with pictures. For right now, he says the belt looks fine and is intact, and has tension. But when he tries to start the car the belt is not turning the camshaft at all.

Is crankshaft (which turns fan belt) turning?
What he said ☝🏾. Ask mechanic to put breaker bar and socket on crankshaft and try to turn clockwise by hand.

Ok so here is my update. The engine shut off on my 07 with 180k miles on the highway this week. Wouldn't start and battery/alternator are fine.

My mechanic pulled off the various covers and parts to evaluate the timing belt, and says that the water pump failed and seized up, which broke the belt in 2 places and damaged the crankshaft and crank sensor.

My mechanic says there is no way to know if the engine is shot or not (ie bent valves) without putting on a new timing belt and water pump. Does anyone have any ideas on how to test the engine before spending all that time and money?

Because I know everyone will ask, my timing belt and water pump were done at 115k miles with Toyota parts. But........i dont put many miles on my car and 115k miles was 10 years ago. I had been planning on doing the 90k service soon and didn't think the number of years since last service were all that important. Apparently not.

Any tips on how to test the engine before dropping all the money on a 90k service for a potentially shot engine would be appreciated.

Yes!

Turn crank with socket wrench. Crank will stop tuning if piston/valves interfere. Removing Spark plugs helps make turning crank easy, but we first try without removing. If crank binds then, remove the spark plugs.

Just spinning crank can give false reading. It just and indicator/clue. Bore scope will be final judge, before spending money on T-belt. This is too find and confirm the damage, if any. The bore scope is used, too looking into each cylinder. If any valves interfered with piston. Both piston and valve with show signs.

If this was not a VVT, I'd' give 99% chance engine is okay (did not interfere). But with a VVT engine, well I've not seen one with a bust t-belt. But by all reports, VVT engine do interfere, . .

Bore scope, is a must in case of a VVT engine.
