Finally painted my rusty white wheels....

Now black

I like it much better!

Here's a before (cleaned) vs. after
blackwheels2.jpg

you'll notice that I didn't mask the tires at all. Well, that's not quite right, on the first one, I did mask it. It was a hassle and I got overspray anyway. :(

So from there on out, I just swiped it down with a rag and some wd40. I figure: How often do you hear that paint came off because there was residue or oil? So a little wd40.... and bingo!... non-stick tire walls. It has been a few days and between the tires flexin and the wd40 treatment, all the paint has pretty much flaked off of the tire, but stuck to the wheels. Except for the one I masked.... that overspray is sticking better!

and here's after, mounted

I did the following:
pull the wheels off
hit them with a wire wheel on angle grinder to get the surface rust off and roughen up the white paint (also removed the dried mud).

Then I hit it with a hose to get the rest of the dirt off

then wipe down with a rag drenched in a rust converter (some sort of mild acid, not great for hands)

then hosed down and scrubbed with a green 3m pad

then dried with a clean rag

then wiped down with a clean rag & rubbing alcohol

then I hit it with compressed air to fully dry it and remove lint

Then hit it with rattle can black paint. I started out with no-name paint, then switched to Krylon semi-gloss black. The first can barely covered 2 wheels (3 coats each). The krylon went on much better and I did the other two wheels and also a top coat on the first wheels.

let it all dry in the sun for about 2 hours, then remounted the wheels (carefully!)

final step was to hit the lugnuts and small dings left by lugwrench, with a final topcoat of krylon.

All in all, it took me about 3 hours, I think (not including the 2hr sitting period).

I like it! Will report back on how well it lasts

here's a little bit better closeup of just one wheel

and no- I didn't even pull off the weights. After I balance the tires next, or get new tires, I'll have to respray. No worries. It's a more expensive to get the tires balanced again than to buy another can of paint!

Man, that's nice. I've been wanting to black em out for a while but was worried it would take too long...sounds like a long afternoon would do it.

Do you anticipate any chipping on gravel or off-road? So far that's the only argument I've heard against painting and in favor of powdercoating.

I thought about bedlining, never even considered powdercoat, but in the end I decided that they WILL get chipped. For sure. When the chips get to be too much, $5 and 15 minutes with a rattle can will fix it right up.

This isn't a show truck. If there is some splotchy black paint due to different brands or whatever, I don't mind.

I was working pretty slow in hot & humid weather (about 37 C/100F and 80-90% humidity). And using bottle jacks and jack stands on gravel (I freakin HATE my gravel parking area). If I had shade and concrete and a floor jack, it would have taken less time. Even so, a short afternoon is plenty. And aside from the jacking up the vehicle part, it is one of those jobs that a few  isn't going to effect, thus much more pleasant than some other tasks.

On my last truck, I used Gravel Guard from a rattle can. I used to have to clean up and repaint my wheels after every winter. One spring I got sick of doing that and decided to spray with gravel guard (used beige IIRC since that's what I had laying around), then a couple of coats of Steel Wheel paint which gave it that stock grayish-silver look. Lasted really well. After 2 years, barely a hint of rust, probably due to a hasty prep job.

I hosed mine off and brushed on el cheapo rust paint, four years ago.

Last year I did mine. Had the tires dismounted, pulled the weights, sanded, painted, new valves, shleped up to have them remounted, etc. and they dont look any better than yours. This time with a new 40 I will use your method!!!

hopefully today will be a little bit of reckoning: going to power wash the truck (much mud in all open spaces)... hoping that the paint doesn't peel right off!

Still haven't done the spare. Thinking of just doing a quick scrub w/ power washer and brushing on some anti-rust paint. It is the spare, after all.

Hey!!

How's it? Just found this post and looked at where you live. I am in Quepos and have almost the same truck. 1986 HJ60 with the same color blue and rack. Working on a lift right now and new wheels and tires. Know where to find wagon wheels or stock cruiser wheels. Really anything other than what I have (rusty chrome). Nice swell today!!!

You guys have waves? Shooot.... all we have is rain, rain, and more rain.
Even if the waves picked up, I'm not sure I want to get into the chocolate milk right now.

I've had a terrible time finding decent wheels around here. There are a number of wheel/tire places up on the highway near(ish) to San Jose coming from here... sorta around Puriscal, I think.

I may have a set of 15x7 aluminum wheels available soon. I'm lifting my new 80 and planning to get larger tires but not sure what route I'll take yet- maybe go 16" (255/85 r 16 is my first choice, 285/75 would be 2nd, 33x12.50 is my last... but also the least exensive).

Cool

Yeah those wheels would probably work. Timeline? I ordered my lift through Neils Cruz at ARB costa rica so it should be here at the beginning of Nov.. Goin w/ 4" OME w/ shackle reversal. I like your black wheels and agree--very easy to touch up!! Have you ever gotten the price of wagon style wheels down here?

Interesting...
Maybe we'll get a chance to meet.
My OME lift is sitting in Atlanta right now, waiting to fly down with my amazing wife (the springs weigh in at about 75lbs, but she just said "sure, I just won't do as much shopping while I'm here").
Anyhow- I'll probably be using Niels' guy in San Jose to do the installation as the 80 series lift needs castor correction bushings pressed in and I don't have a press. I was planning to be there within the first 2 weeks of November.
I've only ever looked at used wheels... hard as heck to find 4 or 5 that match in Guanacaste. I would imagine that you'll have better luck, being closer to San Jose. If I recall, the local chatarerra had some stock wagon wheels for about 10,000 colones each, they were in decent shape.

I don't know the local pricing on the two tire sizes.... I'm just basing on the fact that everywhere I've looked online (mostly USA) the sites list 33x12.50 for a lot less $ than 255/85 or 285/75r16. Plus I'd have to buy new wheels for the 16" tires vs. using either my 15x8 black wheels or the 15x7 stock wheels. What I'm hoping is to find a nice set of the Prado 16x7" rims (they have three big spokes) somewhere. I usually prefer steel to aluminum, but I'm building this truck to look pretty as well as be functional (I'm in Real Estate, and as much as I hate the truth... people do judge other people on how pretty their vehicle looks).

I'm assuming that I'll pay between $120 and $180 per tire, mounted. I plan to poke around La Uruca when I'm next in SJ to see if I can find a "good" deal. I've also been told that some people can get better than average deals direct at the Firestone plant, I'm going to ask around to see if anyone I know can swing that. I did get my local tire repair guy to quote me on some 255/85 Maxxis tires. I think it came out to nearly $200/tire, but his prices are always pretty high, so I'm guessing I could find them for at least $30/tire cheaper.

I don't want to second guess you-- buy why the shackle reversal? I gotta tell you, I've been running a heavy/heavy OME suspension on a 60 wagon for nearly seven years... with 31's, there just isn't any need to go taller and it handles great. If I were to go with taller tires, I'd seriously consider a simple 1" body lift before anything else. That's just my 10 colones....

** Note: I did add one extra support leaf to the front pack on the 60 suspension, but that was with the 2H, a bullbar, and a winch. And the suspension is seven years old with a lot of hard use.

Cruiser

I sort of did some research on different susp. setps and know that I want to use OME springs. I like the shackle reversal setup due to the fact that I really want a 3-4" lift. I could use longer shackles or a body lift but talked to people with the shackle reversal and say it handles better, and you do not have to worry about the front shackles hitting rock or anything. I plan on installing the same size tires as you and my preferances are in the same order. I have always liked to put suspension with an extra inch or two just to never have to worry about tire rub at all. It is cheaper for me to install the kit w/ shackle reversal from the beginning than to add shackles or a body lift later.
Have you disc brakes?
Also, do you know a German in the area named Guido? He is the owner/operator of the Flying Crocodile..
Will your wife have to pay taxes on the suspension when she brings it down? Also have you recieved an estimate for the suspension install from Neli's guy yet?
What realty company do you work with?

Yeah, hopefully we will run into eachother sometime. We moved here in June.

I've seen several wagons (60's) that have 33's without shackle reversals. I'll leave it to you to decide, but personally, I think that Toyota knew what they were doing with the shackle configuration as it is. You'll notice that the lighter-duty pickups/4runners ran the shackle behind the front axle, but the heavy duty trucks (landcruisers) all had the shackle in front for 40 years and 5 body redesigns.

One problem with mud/potholes and a shackle reversal is that whenever you hit a hole at speed, the nose tends to dive downward- which is exactly reverse of what you want it to do. If you are mostly rock-crawling at slow speeds.... that might make sense to do a shackle-reversal. Regardless, I suggest you search the 60 section here on Mud.... (click search, advanced search, shackle reversal and select 60-series section). LOTS of info.

A 1" body lift on a wagon is dead simple, much much easier/faster/cheaper than a shackle reversal. A 2" body lift requires a little more work, still less than a shackle reversal, and has less negative effect on center of gravity and handling.

Sorry, I'll stop now. There are people out there who like SR's. I'm not one of them.

I work for my own brokerage- Bratton Broyles & Associates Here in Tamarindo.

I don't think that I know Guido of the Flying Crocodile...
Haven't gotten an estimate from Niels' guy yet, but Niels mentioned him to me last month over coffee and told me he was good and reasonable (Jim Jackson of ARB USA confirms that he is the right guy to use).

Keep in mind that an 80-series suspension is a whole lot easier/cheaper/faster to install than a 60. It should be under $100 is my guess. A 60 suspension isn't all that difficult to install, unless the shackle pins & bushings are stuck, in which case it becomes a dirty and frustrating experience. Do your guy a huge favor-- every day for three days before you take it in, spray all the shackles/pins with a little WD40 or PBblaster or something similar. It'll make a huge difference for his work load and it'll only take you a minute or two to do. Same goes for the shocks and the steering stabiliser.

Expats can bring in $500 worth of un-taxed merchandise every 6 months. I've got a receipt that says that the suspension is less than $500. That should solve it. I wouldn't fly up just to get the suspension tax free, as it wouldn't be a money-saver.

Sorry

Sorry it took so long to respond. I have been very busy around here!! I already ordered the OME and shackle reversal. I hope it work out for me. I see what your are saying about potholes and such. Did you ever get new wheels for your 80 series? Just wondering. My lift should be here soon. I ordered it through Neils at ARB. I also just got my cruiser back from upholstry. They did a great job!! All new seat covers with foam to build them back up and also all new door panels. What a difference!! Anyway, you should contact me sometime @ my regular email. kbscostarica@hotmail.com

Talk soon. By the way, what an incredible storm we had last night. I had an empty 5 gallon bucket outside and was filled up and overflowing just overnite!!!
