Hi Guys. It's been ages since i've poped around here.

Well, i've searched a litle, to no avail.

I have a friend with a BJ75 pickup. Onto which we've already changed the front axle and leafs. His was dead. Donor vehicule is a rather rusty BJ73. His gearbox and transfer case are badly signing too.

I already have swapped a transfer case in the past, but not both gearbox and t-case.

If anybody can answer, how long would it take? We have forklift, tirfor, two pallet trucks, a good roling car jack, impact wrench. May be by the time we do it, i'll have my hydraulic crane back in the village. 19 tonner boom thing. So we can lift all and everything.

Sorry to bother you with this question.

Thanks.

Max.

Hi satamax
My BJ75 (troopie) is from France and i just did an O/H on the t-case...one of my big problem was the stiffener, reinforcement or strengthener (welded circular cross-member) behind the t-case. There is not enought crearance (can't remove the t-case alone)..have to put the tranny in an anle before removal / reinstall....just be carefull to align the input shaft correctly my 2 cent!

i have researched this in the past.

the 3b ii came with 4 speeds h44s if I remember correctly.
They should bolt right up assuming they have the same input shaft on the transmission.
If there is a pinch there you should be able to swap it into the other transmission with a slight rebuild.
But from what I researched it would work just fine, might even bolt right up.

the 3B II came with either the H41 (4 speed) or the H55 (5 speed).

remove tranny floor cover
remove driveshafts
remove shifters
remove 2 bolts from tranny cross to the tranny
put floor jack under tranny and secure properly
remove 4 bolts into bell housing
remove tranny cross member from frame
pull back and lower carefully

to install, reverse above.

while out,
check all seals (output tranny and t/case and rear engine)
check the clutch disc, pilot bearing, release bearing and pressure plate
turn flywheel

replace if questionable

Max.

Experienced landcruiser mechanics can do it in/out in 5-6 hours.
I could do it myself wihout all the devices in 16 hours in my driveway.
Not a fun day but I can do it
You should be able to finish in a day if you have help.
Its not a complex job as Crushers list shows.
Its just hard work,I dont know if the forklift or any of the other gear will be much help as there is no room underneath to use it.

The easiest way is to lift the whole vehicle off the ground and use a gearbox lifter to support the gearbox.
The main problem removing or fitting one of these is the lop sided weight of the t/case which want to rotate the whole thing.

i made up a mount years ago that you mounted to the bottom of the tranny and it held the tranny and t/case level. made for real quick clutch swaps. it also worked very well for tranny swaps. i also made one for the R series tranny.

I do not know if all the 75 have that cross member juste between the t-case and the fuel tank, but because the input shaft of the h55f is much longer when it is behind a 3b, you will have to install the bell housing on the tranny prior to reinstall it!....i tried it ...the bell on the engine, then you have to raise the tranny with 45 degre angle to get the shaft in the bell, now try to align the shaft in the release bearing waiting on the fork! IMPOSSIBLE, it's not a 60 where you can stand a whole football team helping you! good luck....
check if you have a flexible joint on the exhaust, you may need to disconnect the exhaust piping.
p.s. i did it by myself, 2 jack, some lumber and wood pieces in my parking, about 3 hour to reinstall it

Thanks a lot guys!

Crushers, good to see you're still here.

Both of theses are H55F. Exact same engine, gearbox and Tcase. So it's just a swap. On teh first one, we might even be able to lift the body! I'll tell Dan, my friend to unbolt the 8 body bolts!

Thanks again, you're all ace!

You can buy an adapter on ebay that turns your trolley jack into a gearbox lifter for about $70.
I might try one next time.

yah, i tried one of those generic units, the off set t/case still is a pain to deal with ...
