I have decided that I am going to part with my restored, LHD 1985 BJ74.

I purchased this cruiser from another MUD member a few years back, with full intention of converting it to LHD and restoring it. I decided that the conversion should be done precisely as it would have been from the factory. I used an identical year BJ70 LHD for parts for the conversion.

Currently has 205,000 KM (125,000 miles) on it, so I have put about 7,000 KM (4,200 miles) on it. I have been getting 21-22 MPG---I did get 26 MPG on a road trip. Drives really nice down the road, everything works perfectly. Starts right up every time. Factory glow system works great. Runs 60 PSI oil pressure when warmed up, 40 PSI at idle. I have not done a compression test. EGT about 800 on the road and 8 PSI boost. I have installed a waste gate boost controller under the hood. Current max boost is set at 14, but I have only gotten there once on a full throttle run, for testing. I have never taken it off road, or in the winter since restoration.

You can read the entire process in the build thread, so I won’t go into details here except to summarize a few of the extras.

I will post some pics, but more can be seen at the following link:

I upgraded a few items:

ARB front bumper modified to work with the factory PTO winch. Custom built 3/16 skid plate to protect the winch. Southeast Overland winch rope. JDM land cruiser yellow fog lights

Complete Ironman suspension with greasable anti inversion shackles.

Added FRP flares, imported from down under.

Replaced all foam seals in the complete heating system, and all the vents

Powdercoated frame Wheel housings and all exhaust shields. I powdercoated everything I could.

New OEM Windshield glass and all new OEM seals on all glass.

Underhood hardware yellow zinc plated. Repainted engine and everything under the hood. Take a look at the engine in the build thread. Put a new OEM water pump and a new starter on the motor. Rebuilt the injectors. New belts, hoses and all vacuum lines. Needed nothing else.

All rewiring was done under hood and under the seats , nothing under the dash. This was done to make it easily serviced. Fuse box was moved to the correct place in the left kick panel. Wire splices were soldered, taped and heat shrink applied. All wires were placed in split looms.

Redarc 24V to 12V Tail light converted with 7 pin connector

Interior was completely covered with dynomat sound deadening. Seats are the original, and the interior is in real nice shape. The only thing I replaced was the door panels—custom made vinyl similar to the original pattern, headliner, and the outside of the right front seat, as the vinyl had a crack.

ISSPRO EGT, Boost and Oil Pressure gauges

New Factory Air conditioning condenser added for the LHD

Fluid Film applied to the inside of all body panels.

All doors shut perfect, door, hood and fender gaps are all perfect. Not an air leak or rattle anywhere.

Many, many new OEM parts installed in the restoration. Too many to list! If I could get it new from the OEM, I got it!

Price is $35,000, best offer/trade. I am willing to take trades also. Specifically, I am looking for a nice, 100% rust free 81-83 Mini truck with 5 Speed and AC. Would prefer mostly stock as it will be a driver. I would consider GM classic car. Specifically looking for a 1961 Impala Bubble top, but others would be considered--- Lexus RX350. Last and least, I would consider a (lord, forgive me for my transgressions)—2 or 4 door jeep. Must be auto trans, mostly stock. Please hold your sarcasm, as it is for a relative. Fairly open on trades, so let me know what you have

I have clear Minnesota title in my name.

Feel free to ask any questions—PM is best, or post away for general questions

This resto looks great! I just have one question, why go through all of the trouble of switching from RHD to LHD? Was it simply for resale value, personal preference?? I was driving the wife's RHD BJ71 around today and thinking it's a blast to drive. I also really like the RHD of my HJ61 and at this point wouldn't consider switching either of them over to LHD. What made you do the conversion?

Just personal preference

Open to offers/trades.....

You KNOW you want it :)

Any water leaks inside when it's raining? Do the doors and windshield seal out all the water?

As noted in the build thread, I had a water leak around the windshield when I drove in a POURING rain for 2 hours this summer. Pulled the top, folded the windshield and sealed it up

View attachment 1010681 Dang this photo ......... now I have to spend days cleaning my engine and engine bay. :)

I keep cleaning and cleaning and mine is still RHD!

Super nice - she's mad…..when you sell it will you change your name to "she's happy", or "she's madder" ???? GLWS.

Still Shes Mad-Maybe Shes Bad-cause that can be a good thing too!

I don't have a dog in this fight, since I have a LHD MWB getting a retro-mod treatment If not, I would definitely make an offer on this truck.

It seems to me that in a year or two, this truck/price will be remembered as "the one that got away". Yes, the 1HZ powered rigs will be coming in, but this rig is basically a new LHD diesel, in the USA with a clean title.

For guys whining about "why can't I get one here?" this is the solution.

Of course, you could buy a relatively clean RHD import and then take it apart, swap the steering and then zero-time and assemble the components, but it would likely cost a lot more than the OBO price for this unit.

Just my two cents. GLWS

100% agree with you Ward. Hell, if I wasn't facing a slight bind in cash flows, I'd be scheming a way to add this turbo'd 70 to the stable as well.

GLWS @Shes Mad!

I would agree with above comments as well. The price seems fair to me for something impossible to get. Super clean and well done.

I'll still be a whiner though. If Toyota brought in new ones, I'd have a warranty and cheap financing. :)
I can't throw down lump cash like that, so unfortunately buying above 74 is impossible, otherwise it would already be on its way here.

I am no expert but I understand that there are some interesting financing programs for older Cruisers, both whole vehicle purchases and Vortec swaps.

PS - I am a whiner, too

Make your banker happy and borrow!

It's not the banker I'm worried about :princess:

Wondering if there would be any issues getting this registered in Kalifornistan? I don't think so, as it has a clear title in the US. Maybe there is something I am missing..? Also...how is parts availability?
1- "Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, hybrids, motorcycles, trailers, or gasoline powered vehicles 1975 and older." https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/vr/smogfaq

2- Parts availability - excellent support via Toyota OEM, NAPA and 4 Wheel Auto, etc. for most chassis, drivetrain and related parts, including 13BT consumables. Other engine components available through the 7X vendor/owner community.

Cross over to the wild side and drive a 7X. You won't go back.
