I'd like to know if there's a US-available land cruiser master cylinder that will bolt right in for my '88 BJ74.

I don't want to make any mods except perhaps pulling on a brake hose.

Thanks.

How about rebuilding the master cylinder?

04493-60170 which is available in the US market (master cylinder is not).

Don't forget about the paper gasket between the MC and the booster as well: 47275-22010

Rebuilding, ummmmmmmmm
Last time I did that for a car, the brakes failed after about 3 months.
I'm older but might not be wiser.

I have not been able to find a shop around here that does that kind of work.

I just found this place online. They are not super-close but they can help with my never-to-be-finished MGB project too.

How would I find the original bore spec for brake MC? and clutch?

I seem to think they go up in 1/8ths of an inch with 4* series being 3/4" and the 7* series being 7/8" Any machinist can do that work. I had one done at a local brake shop years ago
One ebay site says the 7* series "22.22mm (7/8")
But you can get aftermarket ones for $65 + postage these days. Ive used a few of them with no problems.

I talked to the machinist I use for everything; he said no go. I called around town and perhaps the best apology I got was "it's almost a lost art".
Here in the US people just toss things out and buy new. For a 70 series that leaves me hanging.
Maybe I should check ads in Aus.

How much bucks for that?

Kit it, see what happens. I have a kit in my trail box.

Scratch that. I think it is discontinued in Japan. Part number is not coming up live in Japan either.

Looks like rebuilding would be the way to go.

Give Dave Stedman at Japan4x4 a call. Dave is in Japan and has been extremely successful at getting all the discontinued/hard to find Toyota parts that I have needed.

I think I'll get a price on rebuild kit first then go from there.

The kit is ~64 bucks.

I have several used ones on the shelve from BJ/HZJ/LJ 7x series if you want to go that route. There are a few different styles though and mine are all from LHD if that makes any difference.

rebuild kit did not worked for me, cylinder wall inside was damaged by rust

Ive installed one from FJ60

I ordered the rebuild kit from the local Toyota dealer. I'm trying to establish a relationship with the parts guys there but it always seems to be a different person at the counter.
I'll call the rebuild/re-sleeve guys on Monday as they may be really useful for me later on with other projects.
It's good to keep some original parts on the car too.
I'll let you know about costs.

I don't know if the brake booster / brake master cylinder are the same on the BJ74 and the HJ75 but this was my solution to braking issues on my HJ75.

FJ Cruiser brake master cylinder and after market modulator to regulate the amount of braking authority going to the front and rear brakes. The brake booster is new also.
