Been searching around and not having much luck on this subject so far, so if you know a good FAQ with this info, please post it up.

What's the difference between a BJ73 and a BJ74? Is it basically the motor? Which motors came in which years?

If the BJ73/4 is a non-turbo, is it still a 13B motor? Or does that make it a 3B (or 3BII)? Would it still be direct injection if it isn't a factory turbo'd motor?

I'm new to the diesels, but I'm looking to pick up a BJ73/74 and trying to pick up just the right truck and I'm not against adding a turbo to the truck myself, but want to make sure it makes sense to do so.

Bj73 came with a 3b as well. I have a bj73 3bii with a garret turbo. Quite happy with it, although I have never driven a 3b turboed or a 13bt. The 3bii is a rotary pump where as most 3bs are inline. Somewhere I think I read that a few 3bs came in rotary as well.

If you see bj74 it will have a 13bt, not a 3b or 3bii...assuming original motor. If you see bj73 it could have a 3b or 3bii. I'm not sure on the years of production. Missed your question on 73/74 in my first reply.

Edit. I believe the 3bii is idi as well, but don't quote me on that.

@NGray - did you add the garret turbo to yours, or buy it with it? I'm wondering if its a "kit" that can be purchased all together (AXT, Turboglide, safari, Jefferson, etc).

I was looking at a BJ73 and figured I could add a turbo kit to it... I was really thinking of the Jefferson kit as they are mud members and offer a nice looking kit using the garret, but that may be only for the 3B, not 3BII...but perhaps could be adapted easily.... I'll have to keep weighing the options and searching around.

I hope that the Jefferson kit can be run on the 3bii , that is what I am planning on one day. I don't want to lose my future hope ... But in all seriousness the 3bii performs pretty well at or close to sea level.

Yeap , it can be used.. I knew I read it some where : Jusdifferentials Project "Inigo" , he installed the Jefferson kit.

Nice find. However, Inigo is a LHD unit from Spain. I recall reading somewhere that only the JDM BJ73s got the 3B-II. Any idea if Inigo had the regular old 3B?--or if it does indeed have the 3B-II? Thoughts?

I'm thinking the Jefferson turbo would still work, but would just need something for the exhaust manifold...

Emailed Keith @ Jefferson looking for info the other day and then again just now asking about the 3B-II and their kit. Here's his response:

"We have done several 3B-II's over the years. Everything will work but the exhaust manifold. But a 14bt manifold has the same bolt pattern for that engine. I can probably source a new Toyota manifold for you if you want to get that engine. Let me know."
Very cool.
