I'm looking for the pic with the measurements of the different length inner shafts and birfields (40,60,70,mini). I think it was Dave's.. you out there?

I'm wondering if the long side front axle shaft is the same as on a 40?

I searched the archives probably not under the right critera though..

Only 4 days til moab for me :)

Pre 90, yes. Both long and short. It's linked from Woody's tech links.

Have fun at Moab. Bringing inner axle spares?

Dave

Though in my measurements it seemed that the 70 was shorter, I used to run a front long side off an early 70 series axle in my 40.

70 axle length

70 long side front inner is same part # as a 42. Not the same as a 40. IIRC

Long side rear is same as 42 but longer than a 40 .

Thanks, I knew it was somewhere. I was only going to take a few birfs but I thought I'd look through my stash for inners too.

So the long sides are the same.. I though the short side was longer than a 40 (maybe it's the later 90+) that folks use for ele lockers?

So the Inner shafts are the same as a latter 40 all the way around?

The short side is the same too. For all practical purposes, the 40 and the pre-90 70 series have the same shaft lengths. The long splined ones to work with factory lockers still have the same overall length.

40 inner shafts are the same since they went to fine spline in, what , 1969?

the latter inner shafts ie from 1976 to 1984 BJ40, Fj40, FJ42 are the same LH and the same RH, the LH are different from the RH...
clear as mucd?

I am brining a complete spare front axle (70 series) to Moab, as well as portable welder, I might even bring my Mig but then I might end up spending all my time welding stuff for everyone else :crybaby:

Cheers,

Excellent. I'm running all fairly easy trails. I just figured if I did blow a Birf that it's usually a faster swap to just slide the whole inner shaft in and be done.

Your correct it is, I looked at what could break and decided if I bring the whole thing then I can just pull of what I would need if I break, not that I am planning on it, I usually don't break on the trails. :D

Cheers,

Michael
