Could someone (Wayne maybe, please?) briefly talk me through the task of changing the clutch on a 85BJ70, Canadian spec? I have the TO bearing, pilot bearing, main seal, disc and pressure plate, as well as the alignment tool and the FSM.
I assume the transmission hump has to be removed, then the transfer/tranny can be dropped, correct?
do I need any special tools for this? I read somewhere that it can be real hard to get the bearings off.
any advice would be appreciated. I am planning a trip far into Mexico, and the clutch has not been changed on the truck before (270k km), so I thought it would be a good preventative measure.
I am not very experienced, but not terrible either, and I have a great friend (hi Michael :)) who is indeed very experienced on those trucks.

thank you,
Jan

The hardest part for me has always been removing the pilot bearing if it's bad. A friend use to bring over a snap-on pilot bearing remover and it was easy. I've never tried the old pressure method with grease. Anyway, that is probably the hardest part. Getting the shifter out can br frustrating if you have never done it before. Otherwise it's pretty simple. Read the FSM each day for a few days and when it comes to doing the work you won't need to look at it except for maybe the torque settings.

That's my .02

if you have a Princess auto near by you can get a pilot bearing remover for about $25 and the pilot will literally fall into your hand.
remove front and rear shafts, remove both shifters and the vacumm lines, remove speedo cable, remove the cover, install the "wayne spec" tranny support bracket, install the floor jack onto adapter, lift up the tranny just a tiny bit and remove all 4 bolt holdin the crossmember in place, remove the 2 bolts holding the cross memeber to the tranny, lift the tranny up and remove the cross member out of the way, remove the 4 bolts holding the tranny to the bell housing, remove the tranny and t/case as one unit, remove starter, remove bell housing, remove pressure plate, (careful not to drop the disc onto your head or chest, remove flywheel (be very careful as this is very heavy) remove the pilot bearing
reverse the steps making sure you hit the pilot bearing on the outside edge and not the center. make sure you press the release bearing onto the adapter pushing on the center of bearing only. (you did get the release bearing right?)
hope this helps
cheers

I’ll try my hand at a clutch replacement procedure somebody else should write a procedure for each of the points marked with an asterisk.

- Decide if you want to pull the engine or the transmission to do the job.

If it’s the transmission…

Disconnect batt negative
Remove shift knobs
Remove shift boots
*Remove transmission shifter
Raise vehicle and secure
Remove skidplate
Remove driveshafts
Remove speedo cable
*Remove t-case shifter
Remove starter
Remove clutch slave
Support transmission
Remove bellhousing bolts
Pull transmission back and lower
Remove clutch cover (pressure plate)
Remove flywheel
*Remove rear main seal holder
*Remove pilot bearing
*Remove throw out bearing from holder
Install new throw out bearing on holder
*Install new pilot bearing
*Install new rear main seal
*Install flywheel
*Install new disk and clutch cover (pressure plate) with clutch alignment tool in place
Check free movement of alignment too once tight
Install transmission (cursing wiggling turning of driveflanges required)
Replace bellhousing bolts
*Install clutch slave and bleed
Install starter
Install t-case shifter
Install driveshafts
Install speedo cable
Install skid plate
Lower vehicle
Install transmission shifter
Install shift boots
Install shift knobs
Reconnect battery
Test drive
Adjust clutch as required.

Thank you Wayne!
release bearing is the same as throw out bearing, right? I have that...
best,
Jan

Where is the best location to place the transmission jack or adapter when raising & lowering the transmission/transfer case to avoid the transfer case from shifting? Perhaps the transfer case would need to be blocked?
