A little off track of the main subject but: Stone, why would a HJ61 get better milage than your BJ74? Aren't we talking a 6 cyl Vs a 4 cyl. Is it a aerodynamic issue or tire size or does it actually come down to the engine? My brother is a convicted Cruiser freak and I have driven both his BJ60 and HJ60 in the past and the BJ did quite a bit better on fuel. I'm always trying to decide too wether I should go for a 74 or a 61. Just trying to get all the facts. :D

Sorry, PVVH...I didn't see your question any sooner. Yes, the 12HT is a 4L inline 6, and my 13BT is a 3.4L inline 4. Also, I'm talking about the HJ61, and not the HJ60 with the old 2H (non-turbo) motor in it, right? I have seen two of these mint HJ61s in Sheldon's and his dad's. I think Sheldon might have smaller tires, but his dad has the same ones that I run. The difference is in gearing...I have 4.11s and he has 3.70s. Even then, I can't remember offhand how much exactly the difference was but it was substantial enough to make in impression.

I just attribute it to the 12HT being maybe a more efficient engine that doesn't have to work as hard as the smaller 13BT. I used to have an old Pathfinder with the 3.0L V6 that got the exact same mileage as a 5.4L V8 Ford of the same vintage...maybe a similar case? The Pathfinder's engine used to work hard while the bigger Ford engine had it pretty easy.

amount of pressure on the fuel pedal??...

Haha...what are you saying, Wayne? :D I do have a tiny bit of a lead foot (my right shoe's sole always seem to wear a bit faster than my left one's :D), but I've heard stories about yours. Lol.

3.7 behind a 12HT would be a great swap as long as you are not into serious off roading. for a highway cruiser i would be tempted to stick 3.7 into the 74 series as long as the tires were 33s or smaller...

Ya Stone, My brothers truck was the Canadian HJ60. Come to think of it though he had 33's on it and the BJ had 30" tires. That alone would have made a difference. I know what you mean about smaller harder working engines. I used to have a Toy pick-up with the 22re and 31's. Had to work that little engine on road trips. Mileage was no better on the freeway than in town.
Oh ya, saw my brothers old HJ60 for sale on the CanadaTrader site. Nice truck when he had it and it still looks nice. $19 300 CAD is a bit steep though.
