I finally figured i'd make a forum post about my BJ42, i've been lurking around the forum for a while now (since i bought my BJ42) just for general tips and info.

Before i molested her with an angle grinder

The aftermarket security keeping guard on the good stuff.

Anyway one day i decided to grind out some sh...ty paint work which revealed some metal glued onto some rust. I kept grinding finding more and more. I then resorted to a cutting disc... when i was done i then realized my car really wasnt fit to drive on the road anymore thanks to my handy work :whoops:

A few weeks later i invested in some rear tub corners and a mig welder and the learning begun

My goal for this thread is to give myself a prod in the ass to keep working on the cruiser and not leave it in the too hard basket.

The color i'm going to paint it is 'olive grey' 6h9 with black engine bay, 'cygnus white' 012 for the roof and grill surround, black bumper/side steps and a poorly matched silver/pewter for the dash surrounds.

This will need to be pried out of my cold dead hands first, it took 3 years of nagging a poor old guy to sell it to me.
Probably should of wrote on the post above, it's a 1984 BJ42 LX with aircon, power steering and 5 speed gearbox. Once the panel work is done i'll look at swapping to the 1hz engine and keep the old 3b on a pallet somewhere should someone ever want it back to 'factory'

Apparently i can't put body filler over existing paint so it was back out with the grinder yesterday.
While it was back to bare steel, i cut and welded the panels a little straighter then started again with the filling. :bang:

Not to sure how straight these things were from factory, putting a level across it on the corner i have some low spots i'm finding hard to get rid of

Managed to get a few small things done.

Rear window frames painted, still need to put some clear coat on them.

First coat of 'cygnus white' on the roof.

2nd or 3rd coat of 'flyweight' filler

All primed :D

I finally went out and bought some argon gas, this makes a world of difference welding.
I was previously using the gasless wire and people kept telling me i couldn't weld which is partially true since it's all new to me however i think my welds in the latest patching efforts are 100 times better.
The top body sections were done before the gas.

The support poles on the top sections are rusted out inside the panel work, i attempted to cut out and fix the driver side.
This was a bit of trial and error the new pole i bought is 1mm larger in diameter than the old so it was back off with it and welded a stump in its place.

Also not sure if this was a good idea mixing metals, i found some stainless c section which was about right for the interior section.
I guess i'll find out later if it's going to be a problem

Still need to get the die grinder out and clean this weld up, at least the dog approves.

Found this speaker near the glove box, is there anymore stashed under the dash area?
IMG_1079.jpg

Removed most of the dash to avoid over spray on the good bits.

Forgot to grab some before shots, both these sections on either side had some bad rust spots.

Attacked the passenger side wheel arch support/floor, removed the support bracket and welded in new panel patches, cleaned up the support and welded that back in place.
While i was doing this i found more rust near the front passenger seat floor

Also the seem along the floor/wheel arch looked a bit suspect, i removed the body sealer and cleaned it out with a 1mm cutting disc.
It didn't look too bad after doing that, this will just get some rust converter/primer.

If you were able to take as many photos of the transmission cover where the stick comes up that would be most appreciated. Would love to get a h55f into my BJ42 but worried about where the stick comes up and cutting my body. Love to see what the factory did.

Will grab a few this evening when i head back to the shed, i always thought the 42's all came out with 5 speed?
I'm considering making a fibreglass mould of this plate since so many people PM'ed me about it.

Haven't really done much over the last month or so.
Test fitted the rear top sections, needed a little bit of die grinding here and there otherwise it came out ok.
