I have heard that the filter lite on my 1981 BJ42 serves several functions?Wish I had an owners manual. Does it lite up if Alternator is bad, low oil pressure, low or no brakes [fluid],water in sedimenter?

what i was told when I first bought my BJ42 was that the filter light will come on when you carnk and should go right off, unless there is a certain amount of water in the sedimenter which would keep the light on in which you would just unscrew the plug in the sedimenter and drain until pure diesel coming out, probably just a second or 2. It woked for mine when my light was staying on.

As far as I know the filter light only indicates a full sedimenter or a fault with your charging system (bad alt, slipping belt, etc).

The brake light indicates the parking brake is set or your brake fluid is low.

EDIT: I don't think there is any warning light for low oil pressure; that sensor simply shuts off the engine.

no multifunctionality to this. It means the float in the sediment filter has risen from the water and needs to be drained

AFAIK, yes to all counts above.

I've lived the fuel filter light indicating a bad alternator coming back from Cruise Moab 2000, or 2001. Drained the sedimenter, no water came out, drained again...then remembered the dual funtion of this light and checked the alternator output = bad brushes.

If anyone has documentation otherwise it would be great info to place on this site.

Nope. Its not clear to me if Toyota designed it this way, or if its just a side effect of the electrical system, but the Filter light indeed does come on when the alternator stops charging for whatever reason.

I do need to check with my truck and the owners manual: my vacuum tank has a sensor on it, so one of these lights may light for low vacuum warning as well. I can't remember if the owners manual said this function was for AUS spec cruisers only, however....

Ok, I read up:

  • "Park Brake"
AUS spec vehicles have a dedicated "Park Brake" light. Its ONLY function is to indicate if the parking brake is set.
Non AUS vehicles don't have this light.

  • "(!) Brake"
All BJ42's have a "(!) Brake" light which indicates three things: Parking brake, Brake fluid, and Low vacuum. If you have an AUS spec vehicle then it only indicate Brake fluid and Low vacuum (the dedicated "Park Brake" light handles the parking brake... duh).
  • "Filter"
Its not clear if AUS vehicles have the filter light or not, however when its present it indicates a full sedimenter or a charging circuit problem. The manual actually doesn't list the discharge warning function, but trust me it works.

Also note that NZ spec is NOT AUS spec. As a boneheaded American I once would have made this mistake, but no longer...

as far as the filter light, my AUS BJ42 has a small round filter light, looks just like the glowplug light. One is on one side of the steering wheel and the other is on the other side, but wierd because my buddy just bought an 82 BJ42 LX from AUS and has no small filter light on his?

I think I just realized I was thinking about a different filter light? Does everyone also have this little round filter light under their tacho? its the one just above the throttle knob next to headlight switch in these pics. In the same spot but opposite side is my glowplug light, they have little metal tags around them, the one says filter, and the other looks like glowplug sign. I did not even realize there was a filter light on the other warning light panel?

my 81 BJ42 (canadian 24v LHD) has small round filter light right of steering column adjacent to throttle knob. it is grounded throught the alternator therefore will come on if charging problem as well as if the sedimenter is in need of being drained.
