Hi, I'm new to the forum.
I need some help with my 1979 Bj40. It has a ford 289 Windsor in it and to get it passed by the engineer it needs to have collapsible steering. Does anybody have the quickest and easiest way to put collapsible steering into it?

"Flaming river" makes a nice telescoping steering shaft and joints. That's what we use at the shop.

If you currently have the stcok steering box it would not be to hard to install the 8/80 and later steering column out of another 40 series. Curious why you ne ed collapsible when Toyota didn't start that until the 81 model.

Do the hj47 or fj45 have collapsible steering and would they be a straight swap as I can get parts from these?

Post a picture of your steering box and current shaft. That will help immensely in guidance

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using IH8MUD

Apparently because of thengine change to a V8 is why I need the collapsible steering. I will try and post some pics of my steering as is.

It doesn't have anything to do with the V8 unless you live in a place where the vehicle has to conform to the safety regulations of the year of the engine, or the year of modification or some such silliness.

If the v8 gets in the way of the stock steering box and requires a new steering box I can see that.

Ididit and flaming river are easy places to get shafts like georg said.

Edit - i would think 79 should have a collapseable column. They were mandatory in cars under 4000lbs in 1968 in the US. Amended to 5,500 lbs in 1991. A stock 40 was about 3250 lbs.

I don't really know why they want it done but its the last thing I need to get it registered and it is annoying me. Do you have a part number for the ididit column?

Here are some photos of my current column

I live in Western Australia and was hoping that just putting a column from a newer model such as a fj45 would do the trick as i'm on a tight budget.

I have had this column apart and it has a solid shaft the whole way up. Any cheap easy suggestions would be great. Thanks.

What are you trying to achieve and why?

I'm not sure why you're asking about a collapsible column?! Your stock steering box is so far back on the frame that it does not raise any safety concerns.

My 81 BJ42 has a collapsable column. As stated above, I think all Land Cruisers post 8/80 have collapsable columns. Trying to find something out of one of those would probably be your cheapest option. Ididit or Flaming River, while very nice stuff, is going to be expensive. Either post up in the classifieds or look in your local salvage yard.

I added power steering from a BJ60 to my BJ42. I found that Toyota shafts from 4 Runners and mini trucks from the early to mid 80s have the same spline count and will interchange (albeit different lengths). They even have the same size bearing for the column. So, if you need to work out something to fit, look for one of those as well.

Like I said the 8/80 and later will be the easiest way to get a collapible steering column. There will be a mod where it goes thru the floor board since the pattern of the flange changed. On LHD models the power steering column was shorter than the manual steering. Tne manual column can have the lower shaft cut down and a hole drilled for the pin that fit into the upper shaft. But the power steering column would be too short for manual steering. Looks like you have manual steering just to be safe I would get a post 8/80 manual steering column out of any 4X series cruisers and you should be good.

I'm not sure why they want it either. I did mention that the steering box is so far back but the transport dep want it done so the engineer can't sign it off until its done. :bang: I hear wat your saying though.

so I finally got time to do some research in regards to putting collapsible steering in my bj40, and as mentioned Ididit make a 32" RHD column which is collapsible so i'm looking at going in that direction.
I found the right part number etc for the column but does anyone know what else I need to purchase to fit it eg brackets etc
