It must be the season for alternators. Been using the Donkey regularly and now the alternator is howling at the engines upper RPM range during acceleration and at 50 mph and above. Now acceleration and 50+,mph are really subjective for a 3-liter B diesel.
I move the key to the off position (motor still runs of course) and there is no load on the alternator and the howl disappears. That's nice but of course turn signals, lights and horn are now non-functional.
I need to either replace or rebuild. Enclosed is the photo of it and I can't make out the part number AND I've not seen a hook up to an alternator that dives inside like this before.
Help!!!!!!

That's had an odd modification at some point with that cable entering the housing like that.

I'd be sourcing new and converting to internal regulated at the same time.. an actual Toyota part number wont be much use to you, suitable alternators are readily available in Australia. Are you 12V or 24V (24V is often much harder to find)

It is a 12V and the back end attachment is the vacuum pump. It has an oil line to?from it and the hose to the Brakes.

Thanks for the comments guys. I will go to the diesel section as well. Haven't had the best luck getting answers there. The FJ crowd has been more responsive:cool:.
