I hate build threads. They're so easy to start and so hard to finish...

Sold the Ranger after buying a scout for the ms. that came with 1.5 other scouts. Hers is shown here and will also get a frankenswap - stay tuned for that one...

Hi All:

Interesting build choice!

May I ask the reason you choose the 3B to re-power this classic Scout (whoops! Guess all Scouts are "classics" now! ;) )

Good luck with the project!

Alan

The choice was actually more about the whole platform rather than just the engine. I wanted a donor truck that could supply the entire drivetrain and it needed to be cheap, stout, reliable, and have easily-sourced parts. And availability - this 60 was sitting in my pal's driveway...

I also wanted the finished product to be capable in the woods on 35's-37's and not super sketchy on the road @ 60mph.

I considered a few other donors was pretty close to putting cherokee running gear in, and was even on the fence about putting the guts from my f250 (7.3l psd!!!) in there... especially since i read a dude's build thread who did just that!

Ok I'm watching now ... Bought my wife a 70, 800 scout last year going the Chevy route just for parts availability... 44 front 14 bolt rear..... So I'll be reading here post up some more

So my weekly update has little to do with the Scruiser, but if you don't like it go home!

There was a first ever hillbilly camper race in town this weekend so my pal Carlos scored a $100 grand am for the event. It was quickly decided that it would be painted pink and emblazoned with "GRAND HAM" racing livery. @ 2 am.:

Also, I picked up a camper...:

...And jumped this through it (the 7.3l psd that almost went into the scout!) Had lift it off due to ttb "issues":

The Grand Ham (AKA "!El Peurco Loco!") placed 4th out of 6. Still ran but shredded both front tires... After the carnage:

One more of the Scruiser:

Next on the Scruiser list is mounting the steering box and getting the 3B lit...

This week's update: slightly more scruiser than hillbilly racing...

Shot some more body panels

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x467/GMillionS_esq/IMG_1371.jpg

Got the toyota steering column shortened (significantly!) and mounted. Using this so i can have a tilt-wheel, modern control set-up (stock scout ignition tumbler is on the dash to the left of the steering wheel), and since it'll keep wiring very simple.

Don't look too hard at my firewall hack-job... this is gonna get fixed to look slightly less horrible

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x467/GMillionS_esq/IMG_1392.jpg

Got the toyota steering box almost mounted (2 thru-frame bolt sleeves out of 4 burned in). Intermediate shaft had to be lengthened 2.5" and u-joint angles are fine.

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x467/GMillionS_esq/IMG_1393.jpg

So since i broke the main leaf on one of the 60's front packs, I was going to run a set of *free* 80's blazer front leaf packs (2 3/4" wide) and do a shackle reversal.

But instead, due to pitman arm/steering gear clearance and for a few other reasons, I think I might go with a link/coilover set up. For this I may re-purpose some ttb ranger skyjacker radius arms (*free*), fab a pan-hard bar, and run coilovers. Thoughts??

Here's what the radius arm set-up looks like under a ttb ranger:

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/images/skyjacker_radius_arms_installed.JPG

After I bit of reading on basic suspension geometries, I will not be using radius arms...

So far everything has been waaay too easy... I'm gonna jinx it here and say I might actually have a working vehicle by the end of this!

Got the toy steering column connected to the toy steering box.

Scout brake and clutch pedals connected to toyota brake and clutch master cylinders. Really wanted to have power brakes but space is very tight. May look into a hydro-assist set-up or just deal with manual brakes and maybe get a manual wilwood mc.

Also got the toyota accelerator pedal mounted and connected to the throttle body via the weird 60 series mech linkage to cable set-up.

Got bored and burned this wicked (very temporary) hotrod shift lever up!!!

http://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x467/GMillionS_esq/IMG_1396.jpg

Nice I like ... Makes me want to get out there and start mine....

Ain't nothin to it but to do it!!

Shortening my rear driveshaft right now then I'm gonna pull the scout fuel tanks and get em ready for some greasy diesel
