I have my 42 up on jackstands , the case and tranny split [ with your help finding the last three bolts inside the transfer case] and off to Marlin for rebuilds. The front fenders, bib, radiator, battery mounts, steering box and mount are out yesterday. Today is clean up day. I haven't done anything as major as this in fifteen years or so. I need some advice on how to proceed. I'm going to por the frame as much as possible, install a mimi truck p/s box[ using Poser's info, got the box and a saginaw pump to mount under the alternator, ] New ccot springs and shocks 4" lift ,and a solar converter and some isspro guages, oil pressure, temp and pyro. Here are my questions. I seem to have an oil leak , looks like its leaking from behind the water pump. Is that possible? I want to remove the pump and replace the gasket . is there any where behind that pump where oil can leak out? Engine runs fine other than that. My radiator is leaking too,, Should I have it recored or spend for a new one? Anyone Know of a source for a new one? The mini truck box has a shorter pittman arn[ is that what it is ?? ] Anyway, the arm is shorter than the one on my stock steering box . Should I use the one from the origional box or will the shorteer arm work ok??? Any advice will be very appreciated Thanks Tim

Hi.

The oil is very likely coming from the side cover gasket (they're always leaky) even if it looks like it is coming from behind.

A good rad even with tubes pinched off will work 20' better than an old one. A new one is worth the money as they work so good and they last.

Pitman arms will interchange, probably.

some 3Bs have a head gasket problem of leaking oil. wash down the engine with engine degreaser and drive till you see the oil leak reappearing. see if it is right between the head and the block if it is no higher than that then you have your answer and unless the leak is bad i would ignore it as most of the owners have in the past. if the leak is bad then it will be time to change it out. another couple bad spots ae as Charla said, the side cork gasket on the inspection cover or the netorious tappet cover (usually near the rear of the engine up top).

Thank you all for your help. Based on your advice I will probably clean up the engine and wait to drive it and see where it is coming from .Its all over the front of the engine and could very well be from the head gasket as I don't see any oil above that level. I will interchange the pittman arms and price out [gulp] a new radiator. Tim

the front engoine seal is also netorious for leaking which could spray with the air flow up the front of the block and along the sides...
